TL;DR. A diploma in business management in Sri Lanka is a short qualification that either prepares you for the second year of a university degree or builds practical management skills, and the right one depends on whether a degree is your next step. Uplift lists pathway diplomas at Nawaloka College of Higher Studies and Universal College Lanka, and advanced diplomas at NIBM, with fees on each course page.

Business is a popular choice after A/Ls, and a diploma is a shorter way to start. The harder question is which kind of diploma fits you. This guide sets out the routes listed on Uplift, what they cost according to their course pages, and what to check before you apply.

What is a diploma in business management in Sri Lanka?

Uplift groups these programs under the business study area and its child area, business management and administration. Two kinds of diploma sit there. Pathway diplomas are designed to lead into a university degree. Advanced diplomas are management qualifications that you can also build on with a higher national diploma or a degree.

Pathway diplomas that lead into a university degree

The Diploma of Business (UniLink) at Nawaloka College of Higher Studies is an eight-month full-time program awarded through Swinburne University of Technology. The course page lists tuition of LKR 1,000,000 in total and a separate application fee of LKR 150,000. It describes progression into the second year of selected Swinburne bachelor's degrees. Entry asks for at least three subjects at the GCE A/L, plus an English requirement. You can read more about the college in the Nawaloka College of Higher Studies guide.

The Monash College Diploma of Business at Universal College Lanka is also an eight-month full-time program. It is awarded through Monash College, and the page lists tuition of LKR 1,800,000 in total. The page describes it as the first step towards a Monash business or commerce degree. Entry asks for completed A/Ls or an equivalent, and applicants must be at least 17 years old. The Universal College Lanka guide covers the rest of the college.

Advanced diplomas at NIBM

The National Institute of Business Management (NIBM) lists the Advanced Diploma in Business Management in three versions, and each runs for one year.

  • The version for students after A/Ls is full-time, costs LKR 350,000 in tuition and asks for three passes at the A/L in the main subjects.

  • The version for professionals is part-time, costs LKR 250,000 and asks for A/L passes with three years of work experience, or O/L passes with five years of experience.

  • The online version costs USD 1,165 in tuition and is aimed at applicants with work experience.

Which diploma in business management should you choose?

If you want a foreign university degree

A pathway diploma is built for this. You study eight months in Colombo, then move towards the degree of the awarding university. Check which bachelor's degrees the diploma links to, because the course page names the university but not every degree. Ask the college to confirm the grades you need to move up.

If you want a management qualification quickly

An advanced diploma suits students who want a local, job-focused qualification. If you plan a degree later, ask the institute what the diploma leads to, and compare it with the routes in our guide to business management degrees in Sri Lanka.

If you already work

Part-time and online versions let you keep earning. The professional version asks for work experience, so check that your years of service meet the rule on the course page.

How much does a diploma in business management cost?

Quote the fee of each program from its own course page, because the diplomas are not like for like. A pathway diploma is the first step towards a foreign degree, while an advanced diploma is a separate qualification. Some pathway programs also charge an application fee on top of tuition, as the Nawaloka page does. Fees change, so confirm the figure with the institute before you pay.

What should you check before you apply?

Ask three questions. Which degrees does the diploma lead to, and at which grade? Is the fee shown the total or a yearly amount? Which campus runs the next intake? Dates change, and the Uplift pages for some of these programs do not confirm a current intake, so ask the institute directly.
