TL;DR Diploma courses in Sri Lanka come in several kinds. University pathway diplomas from Swinburne and Monash College prepare you for degree study. BTEC HND diplomas lead towards a top-up degree. KIU University also lists diplomas in psychology and counselling and in acupuncture. Pick by your goal, entry grades and budget, then check each course page.

If you have finished A/Ls, or are close to it, a diploma can be a shorter first step than a full degree. The word covers very different programs, though, so it helps to sort them by purpose before you compare fees. A student who wants a job quickly needs a different diploma from one who wants a bachelor's degree at a particular awarding university.

Pathway diplomas for degree study

A pathway diploma is built to lead into a bachelor's degree. You study the first stage of a degree curriculum in a smaller class, with academic and English support, and then move on once you meet the progression conditions. On Uplift, two groups of pathway diplomas are listed.

Swinburne UniLink diplomas at Nawaloka College

Nawaloka College of Higher Studies teaches the UniLink diplomas, awarded by Swinburne University of Technology. The pages describe progression into the second year of selected Swinburne bachelor's degrees after you complete the diploma.

  • Diploma of Business, 8 months full-time, listed at LKR 1,000,000 total tuition.

  • Diploma of Information Technology, 8 months full-time, listed at LKR 1,083,000 total tuition.

  • Diploma of Health Science, 8 months full-time, listed at LKR 1,083,000 total tuition.

  • Diploma of Engineering, 8 months full-time. Check the course page for the fee.

Entry is by satisfactory completion of a minimum of three Sri Lankan G.C.E. A/L subjects, plus an English requirement such as a C grade in O/L English. The course pages list the full English options.

Monash College diplomas at Universal College Lanka

Universal College Lanka teaches Monash College diplomas in Business, IT, Science and Engineering. The pages describe them as pathways into Monash University degrees. The Diploma of IT page describes entry to the second year of an IT or Computer Science degree at Monash University.

  • Diploma of Business, Diploma of IT and Diploma of Science: 8 months full-time, each listed at LKR 1,800,000 total tuition.

  • Diploma of Engineering: 12 months full-time, listed at LKR 2,100,000 total tuition.

The Diploma of Business asks for a minimum age of 17 and completed A/Ls or an equivalent qualification. The Diploma of IT asks for a minimum age of 16, completed A/Ls or equivalent, and IELTS 5.5 or equivalent.

Choosing between the two groups

Both groups are 8 months for most subjects, so the real differences are the awarding body, the degrees you can progress to, and the fee. Ask each institute which bachelor's degrees the diploma qualifies you for and where that degree is taught. The answer decides whether the pathway fits your plan to study and work in Sri Lanka or elsewhere.

BTEC HND diplomas

Some HNDs are listed at diploma level on Uplift. The BTEC HND in Marketing at Asian Institute of Business and Science runs 3 years in hybrid mode and is linked to Edge Hill University. Colombo International Campus lists Pearson BTEC HND programs in Networking and in Software Engineering. An HND is a Level 5 qualification, and many students then add a top-up year to reach a degree. Read our guides to the HND in Sri Lanka and the top-up degree for the full route.

Diplomas in psychology and counselling

KIU University lists a Diploma in Psychology and Counselling, 12 months full-time at KIU Colombo. It suits students who are interested in psychology and counselling and want a shorter first step than a full degree. KIU also lists a Diploma in Acupuncture. Check the course page for current details.

How to compare diploma courses

Use the same four questions for every diploma:

  1. What is the diploma for: a job, an HND route or a degree pathway?

  2. Who awards it, and which degrees does it lead to?

  3. What are the total tuition and application fees?

  4. What are the entry grades and English requirements?

Differences in fees often reflect different awarding bodies, class sizes and degree routes, so compare scope as well as price.

FAQ

Is a diploma the same as an HND?

No. An HND is a Level 5 qualification. Diplomas on Uplift range from 8-month pathway diplomas to 12-month professional diplomas.

Can I start a diploma after O/Ls?

Some can, but several pathway diplomas ask for A/L subjects. Read the entry section on the course page. Our foundation programme guide covers routes after O/Ls.

Do diplomas guarantee degree entry?

The pages describe progression to selected degrees after you complete the diploma. Ask the institute what grades and conditions apply.

PS. Open the course pages for the diplomas that match your goal and write down the fee, duration and entry rule for each. If you want a pathway into degree study, start with the Diploma of Information Technology at Nawaloka College.
