TL;DR. The Foundation Diploma in Business at Colombo International Campus (CIC) is a full-time foundation program that runs for 12 months. It covers management, marketing, finance, human resources and entrepreneurship, and is designed to lead into a business HND. The Uplift listing does not show a fee, so confirm it with CIC.

Apply now

Many students finish O/Ls knowing they want a business career but not knowing which subject to specialise in. A foundation diploma gives you a year to learn how organisations work before you choose. This guide explains what the CIC program offers, who can enter, and how it connects to the HNDs that come next.

What the program is

CIC describes the program as a first step for students with no prior business knowledge. It introduces how organisations operate and covers management, marketing, finance, human resources and decision-making, with a practical focus on case studies, simulations and applied projects. The listing says lecturers have industry experience.

The listing gives an overview but no module list, and says module detail is available from CIC directly.

Where it leads

The listing states a clear progression: HNDs and higher qualifications in business, accounting, finance or management. CIC offers HNDs in those areas, and the cards below show the business HNDs currently listed on Uplift.

If you want a longer view of how an HND connects to a degree, read our guide to HNDs in Sri Lanka and the one on turning an HND into a degree.

Entry requirements

The listing sets out academic and English criteria:

  • At O/L, a minimum of six passes including a pass in English and a pass in Mathematics.

  • At A/L, any stream with at least two passes, or an internationally recognised equivalent qualification.

  • English: basic proficiency is required, and IELTS or PTE are not mandatory for entry.

There is a point to check. The program description says it is designed for O/L graduates, yet the entry criteria also list A/L passes or an equivalent qualification. Ask CIC which of these applies to you, particularly if you have not yet sat your A/Ls or are waiting for results.

Preparing your application

Keep your O/L results, any A/L results, a copy of your identity document and a short note on why you chose business. Ask CIC which documents it needs and in what format, so you can apply as soon as your results allow.

Duration and fees

The listed duration is 12 months of full-time study at CIC Colombo. The Uplift listing does not show a tuition fee for this program, and no intake dates are listed. Ask CIC for the current fee and what it includes, then compare it with other foundation options on Uplift.

Is a foundation the right first step?

If you finished O/Ls and want to start a business career

This is the audience the program is written for. A foundation year lets you test whether business suits you before you commit to a longer HND or degree. See our guide to foundation programmes after O/Ls for how that decision works across fields.

If you are waiting for A/L results

Entry into a foundation can be a sensible backup while results are pending, but it should be a decision rather than a default. Read what to do while waiting for A/L results before you choose.

If you already know your specialism

If you are certain you want accounting, management or entrepreneurship, ask whether you can enter the matching HND directly. The foundation year adds time, and it is worth that time only if you need the grounding.

Questions to ask CIC

  1. What is the tuition fee, and are there extra charges for materials or assessments?

  2. Which module list will my intake follow?

  3. Does passing the foundation guarantee a place in a CIC HND, or do I apply separately?

  4. Which entry route applies if I hold both O/L and A/L results?

  5. When is the next intake?

Frequently asked questions

Do I need IELTS?

The listing says IELTS or PTE are not mandatory for entry. Basic English proficiency is required.

Is it only for school leavers?

The description targets O/L graduates, and the entry criteria also allow A/L students. Ask CIC about mature applicants.

How do I compare other foundation programs?

Use the Uplift search for foundation programs and compare duration, entry rules and fees on each program page.
