TL;DR: If you studied the technology stream for your A/Ls, you can move into an engineering or computing degree, start with a foundation year that does not ask for A/L results, or take an HND. Entry rules differ by institute, so read the course page before you apply.

Many technology stream students finish the exam and ask the same thing: do I wait for a state university place, or can I start now? You have more choices than it feels like. This guide walks through the routes listed on Uplift and what each one asks for.

Start with how you want to study

State university places are allocated through the Z-score by the University Grants Commission. This guide covers the other routes: private and transnational degrees, foundation years and HNDs. Many students keep both doors open and decide when results arrive.

Three questions help you sort the options. Do your A/L results meet the entry rule for a direct degree? Do you want to start a degree straight away or build up to it? How much can you spend on tuition? The sections below answer each one with details from the course pages.

Engineering degrees

Kingston University BEng programs at ESOFT Uni

ESOFT Uni lists several Kingston University (UK) BEng (Hons) degrees, each three years full-time. Civil, mechanical, electrical and electronic, and electronic and communication engineering are among them. The course pages list total tuition of LKR 1,420,000 for each of these, plus an application fee of LKR 25,000.

The entry rule on those pages is three A/L passes, preferably including Mathematics, Physics or Combined Mathematics, or an equivalent foundation qualification. Ask the institute how your technology stream subjects count against that preference before you apply. For example, see the Mechanical Engineering page and the Civil Engineering page. Our guide to Kingston University degrees in Sri Lanka covers the full set.

Software engineering and electrical routes elsewhere

The BEng (Hons) in Software Engineering is awarded by London Metropolitan University (UK), runs for three years full-time and lists LKR 1,620,000 in total tuition. Its entry rule is an A/L qualification with a minimum of two passes, or a relevant foundation programme.

Universal College Lanka lists the BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronics Engineering as a four-year full-time degree. A fee is not listed on the page today, so ask the institute for the current figure.

Computing and IT degrees

If you enjoyed the technology and ICT side of your stream, computing is a natural fit. The BSc (Hons) in Computing at ESOFT Uni is a three-year London Metropolitan University degree with total tuition of LKR 1,620,000 and a minimum of three A/L passes.

KIU University lists a four-year BSc Honours in Management Information System. Its first entry route names your stream directly: three simple passes in the Physical Sciences or Engineering Technology stream at the A/Ls in one sitting. Other routes are listed for students from different streams, so open the page and read all of them. The degree includes a one-year industrial placement.

Our IT degree guide compares more computing routes.

Foundation years if you want a stepping stone

A foundation year suits you if your results fall short of a direct entry rule, or if you want a gentler start. The Foundation Year in Engineering and the Foundation Year in IT at ESOFT Uni are both Kingston University programs that run for one year. The pages list total tuition of LKR 710,000 and state that A/L results are not required for this pathway. An O/L qualification or equivalent is the starting point.

Colombo International Campus lists a Foundation in Computing that also starts from O/Ls. Its duration and fee are not listed today, so confirm both on the page.

Read the Foundation Year in Engineering page for the full outline.

HNDs and diplomas after A/Ls

An HND is a shorter route that can lead on to a degree. Colombo International Campus lists HNDs in computing, including network engineering, cyber security and software engineering. The academic criteria are any stream with at least two A/L passes, or an internationally recognised foundation qualification in IT or computing. Most run for 18 months full-time.

Nawaloka College of Higher Studies lists a Diploma of Engineering (UniLink) that runs for eight months full-time and asks for at least three A/L subjects. The page describes it as a pathway towards an engineering bachelor's degree at Swinburne University of Technology with advanced standing of up to one year. Read the page to see how the pathway is structured.

Our HND guide explains how an HND leads to a degree.

How to choose

  • Strong results in the subjects named on the course page: compare direct entry degrees.

  • Results that fall short, or a wish to build confidence first: look at a foundation year.

  • A wish to start working sooner: look at an HND, then a top-up later.

  • A tight budget: compare the total tuition on each page and ask about payment options.

Frequently asked questions

Can I study engineering after the technology stream?

Entry is set by each institute. The ESOFT Uni Kingston BEng pages ask for three A/L passes, preferably including Mathematics, Physics or Combined Mathematics, or a foundation qualification. If your subjects do not match, a foundation year is the route to ask about.

Do I need A/L results to start?

Not for every route. The foundation years listed above start from O/Ls. Degrees and HNDs ask for A/L passes, with the number set on each page.

Where do I find fees?

Each course page lists total tuition where the institute has provided it. Where a fee is missing, ask the institute and keep the answer in writing.

Can I apply to several programs?

Yes. Shortlist two or three, compare the entry rules and apply to the one that fits.

PS. Open the programs that match your results and compare them side by side on Uplift, then apply to the one that fits your subjects and budget.
