TL;DR: An IT degree in Sri Lanka can start in three ways: a three or four-year bachelor's degree straight after A/Ls, a foundation year after O/Ls, or a short diploma that leads into a degree. Uplift lists 11 IT and computing programs at degree, foundation and diploma level across six partner institutes. The right one depends on your A/L stream, how long you want to study, and whether you want a UK-awarded or a locally awarded degree.
Can I get in with my A/L results? How long will it take? What will it cost? This guide answers all three using the program data on Uplift.
What an IT degree in Sri Lanka actually covers
"IT" is a wide label. Before you compare programs, it helps to know the three shapes it comes in.
Information technology or computing degrees cover programming, networks, databases, web systems and how organisations run technology. They suit students who want a broad base and are not yet sure which tech role they want.
Management information systems (MIS) degrees mix IT with business. You learn systems and data, plus how companies make decisions with them. They suit students who like technology but also want a path into management.
Applied computer science degrees lean harder on programming, algorithms and maths. They suit students who enjoy problem solving and want to build software.
If you already know you want to write code for a living, a software engineering degree is a closer fit.
IT degree routes on Uplift compared
Here is how the bachelor's routes on Uplift compare on the facts the catalogue holds today.

| BSc (Hons) in Computing | Esoft Uni | 3 years | London Metropolitan University | Minimum 3 passes |
| BSc Honours in Management Information System | KIU University | 4 years, full-time | KIU University | 3 simple passes, Physical Science or Engineering Technology stream |
| Bachelor of Applied Computer Science | Universal College Lanka | 4 years | Check on the course page | Two A/L subjects at grade C |
| Bachelor of Information Technology | Nawaloka College of Higher Studies | Check on the course page | Check on the course page | A/L completed or equivalent |
A few points stand out.
Stream matters less than you think. The AIBS computing degree states that any A/L stream is accepted, and most of the others do not name a required stream. That is good news for Commerce and Arts students who have found they enjoy technology.
KIU has a second door. The KIU MIS degree asks for the Physical Science or Engineering Technology stream. Students from any other stream can still enter with three simple passes, a credit pass in O/L Mathematics and a bridging programme.
Fees are listed for one program so far. The Esoft Uni computing degree, awarded by London Metropolitan University, shows LKR 1,620,000 total tuition and a LKR 25,000 application fee. For the others, check the current fee on each program's Uplift page before you decide.
Three-year UK-awarded or four-year local degree?
This is the choice most families get stuck on. Neither is better in general. They suit different students.
A three-year UK-awarded degree, taught in Sri Lanka, gets you to the job market a year sooner. The degree certificate carries the name of the UK university that awards it, and the teaching happens at the Sri Lankan campus. It suits students who want to start working early.
A four-year degree gives you an extra year of depth. That year often carries a longer project, an internship or more specialised modules. It suits students who want more time to build skills before their first job, or who are thinking about postgraduate study later.
Ask each institute two questions before you choose: how much practical project work is built in, and what support you get to find an internship.
