TL;DR: After the A/L commerce stream you can choose a business, accounting, banking, marketing or hospitality degree, or start with an HND or foundation. Entry rules differ more than most students expect, so read each page. Some programs ask for specific subjects, and others accept any stream.

Commerce stream students have the widest set of local options, but a wide choice makes it harder to decide. Many students pick the first familiar name and find out later that the entry rule, the length or the fee did not match their plan.

This guide walks through the main routes in the order most students consider them, using the program pages on Uplift.

Start with the three types of route

A commerce background fits three types of program. A degree takes three or four years and leads to an honours award. An HND is a diploma that takes about 18 months and can lead on to a top-up degree. A foundation is a bridge year for students who want a gentler start.

Which one suits you depends on your A/L result, your budget and how soon you want to work.

Degrees

Accounting

The BM (Hons) in Accounting at KIU University runs for four years. Its entry rule asks for three simple passes in the Commerce stream including Accounting in one sitting. Students from other streams can apply with three passes plus a Credit pass in Mathematics and in Business and Accounting Studies at O/L.

Business administration and banking

ESOFT Uni lists two three-year degrees awarded by London Metropolitan University (UK). The BA (Hons) in Business Administration and the BSc (Hons) in Banking and Finance each list LKR 1,620,000 in total tuition and ask for three A/L passes or an equivalent foundation.

International business

The BSc (Hons) International Business at AIBS is a three-year degree awarded by Edge Hill University. It asks for six O/L passes including English and Mathematics, and three A/L passes in any stream.

Marketing, human resources and analytics

KIU University lists four-year honours degrees in Marketing, Human Resource and Business Analytics. Each asks for three simple passes at A/L in any stream.

Hospitality

The BA (Hons) in Hospitality Management at ESOFT Uni lists LKR 1,420,000 in total tuition and asks for a minimum of two A/L passes.

HNDs and foundations

If your A/L result is modest or you prefer a shorter first step, an HND is a sound start. Colombo International Campus lists HNDs in Accounting and Finance, Business Management and Entrepreneurship and Small Businesses. Each runs for 18 months in a hybrid format and asks for at least two A/L passes in any stream.

Professional exams alongside a degree

Many commerce students also plan professional accounting exams. Our accounting degree guide explains how degrees and professional exams fit together.

Fees and what to compare

Each program page on Uplift lists the fees the institute has provided, usually as total tuition plus a separate application fee. Some pages do not list a fee yet. In that case, ask the institute for the current figure and keep the reply in writing.

Compare like with like. A three-year degree and a four-year honours degree differ in length, so the cost per year differs even when the totals look close. A hybrid HND and a full-time degree also ask for different amounts of your week. Fee, length, format and awarding university belong together in one comparison.

A simple way to shortlist

Start with your A/L result and check which entry rules it meets. Remove anything that asks for a subject you do not hold. Then choose two programs that fit your interests and compare them side by side. Finally, open each program page and read the entry rule again, word for word, because small differences such as one sitting or a specific O/L grade can decide whether you qualify.

How to choose

  • You want a four-year honours degree and your subjects match: check the KIU accounting rule.

  • You want a shorter degree with a UK-awarded qualification: compare the ESOFT programs.

  • You want to start with less pressure: consider an HND or a foundation.

  • You are unsure of your field: pick a broad program such as business administration.

Fees are not directly comparable, because length, format and awarding university differ. Use the fee as one factor, not the only one.

Questions to ask before you apply

  1. Does my A/L result meet the entry rule exactly?

  2. Which university awards the degree?

  3. What is the total tuition, and how is it paid?

  4. Can I transfer to a degree later if I start with an HND?

Frequently asked questions

Do I need accounting at A/L to study accounting?

The KIU accounting degree accepts students from other streams who meet its O/L Mathematics and Business and Accounting Studies rule. Check the page for the full wording.

Is a commerce stream required for business degrees?

Most business programs listed here accept any stream, so commerce is helpful but not essential.

Can I study while working?

Some formats are hybrid or part-time. Read the study mode on each page.

What if my A/L result is lower than I hoped?

Start with an HND or a foundation. Several pages ask for only two A/L passes in any stream, and a top-up can then lead to a full degree. Ask each institute how the transfer works before you enrol.

PS. Shortlist two programs that match your result, compare their pages on Uplift and apply to the one that fits.
