TL;DR: Kingston University (UK) awards engineering, computing and construction degrees that students can study in Colombo at ESOFT Uni. Undergraduate degrees run for three years, and master's programs suit graduates. Entry rules and tuition fees are listed below for the programs on Uplift.

Many students ask whether they can earn a Kingston University qualification without leaving Sri Lanka. On Uplift the answer is yes, through ESOFT Uni, where the classes are taught locally and the degree is awarded by Kingston University (UK).

This guide explains which levels are available, what each one asks for at entry, and what the tuition fees are. Every figure comes from the Uplift course pages.

How a Kingston program works at ESOFT Uni

You enrol and study at ESOFT Uni. Kingston University (UK) is the awarding university, which means the final degree certificate comes from Kingston. The course pages list the awarding university for each program, so you can confirm it before you apply.

Programs sit at three levels: a one-year foundation year, three-year bachelor's degrees and master's programs. Pick the level that matches the qualification you hold today.

Foundation year: start after O/Ls

The foundation year is a non-traditional pathway. The course pages say an O/L qualification or equivalent is enough and A/L results are not required. You also need a genuine interest in the field, and English language proficiency may be required.

A foundation year is listed in Engineering and in IT. Each has a tuition fee of LKR 710,000 in total, with a separate application fee of LKR 20,000. Each lasts one year.

Bachelor's degrees: engineering and computing

The engineering degrees are BEng (Hons) programs in civil, mechanical, electrical and electronic, and electronic and communication engineering. Each runs for three years, and the tuition fee is LKR 1,420,000 in total, with a LKR 25,000 application fee.

The computing degrees include the BSc (Hons) Computing Science in Software Engineering and the BSc (Hons) in Cyber Security and Digital Forensics. Each also runs for three years. The tuition fee is LKR 1,620,000 in total for the weekend and blended format.

Entry rules for the engineering degrees

The usual route is Sri Lanka A/L with three passes, preferably including Mathematics, Physics or Combined Mathematics, or an equivalent foundation qualification. Applicants with an HND or an equivalent Level 5 qualification in a related discipline may be eligible for direct entry into the final year. English language proficiency may be required.

Entry rules for the computing degrees

The course pages ask for an A/L qualification or equivalent with three passes, or an equivalent foundation qualification. Applicants with relevant work experience may be considered.

Quantity surveying

The BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying is also awarded by Kingston and runs for three years. The Uplift page lists an international tuition fee of USD 6,000 in total. A local fee was not on the page at the time of writing, so check it with the institute on its Uplift page. You can read more in our guide to the quantity surveying degree in Sri Lanka.

Master's programs for graduates

The Kingston master's programs are for graduates with a relevant first degree, usually with second class honours or equivalent. Some professional experience is described as an advantage for several of them. Formats are hybrid or part-time.

The IT and computing master's programs, such as Data Science, Software Engineering and Network and Information Security, carry a tuition fee of LKR 790,000 in total. The engineering and construction master's programs carry LKR 840,000 in total. Each also has a LKR 25,000 application fee.

How to choose between the levels

  • Hold only O/Ls: look at the foundation year first, since it is built for you.

  • Hold A/Ls with three passes: go straight to a three-year bachelor's degree.

  • Hold an HND: ask about direct entry into the final year, where the program page allows it.

  • Hold a degree: look at the master's programs in your field.
