TL;DR: An HND in Sri Lanka is a Higher National Diploma, usually from Pearson in the UK, that you can start with A/L passes. It equals the first two years of a degree and takes about 18 months. You can then top up to a full bachelor's in about a year. On Uplift you can compare HNDs in computing, cyber security, business, accounting, marketing and food science from two partner campuses in Colombo.

Your A/L results are in, and a state university place is not on the table this year. Or it is, but the course is not the one you wanted. Either way, you want a qualification that counts, that starts soon and that leads somewhere real. That is the gap an HND fills.

This guide explains what an HND is, how it links to a degree, and how to choose between the HNDs listed on Uplift today.

HNDs you can compare on Uplift

Two campuses list HNDs on Uplift today: Colombo International Campus (CIC) and the Asian Institute of Business and Science (AIBS). The list below shows every HND on Uplift, with an Apply now button on each.

Fees for most of these HNDs are not yet listed in the Uplift catalogue. Check the current fee with each campus on its Uplift page before you decide.

What an HND is

HND stands for Higher National Diploma. Most HNDs taught in Sri Lanka are Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals. Pearson describes them as higher education qualifications at level 4 and 5 that are equal to the first and second years of a university degree.

That last point is the one that matters. An HND is not a short certificate. It is two years of degree-level study, packed into a shorter and more practical course. You learn through assignments and projects rather than one big exam at the end.

The key facts on Uplift:

  • Awarded by Pearson (UK), taught by a local campus.

  • Level 4 and 5, the first two years of a degree.

  • Mostly 18 months full-time or hybrid.

  • Entry is usually 2 or 3 A/L passes, plus basic English.

  • The usual next step is a one-year top-up degree, or work.

Who an HND suits

An HND tends to suit you if:

  • You have A/L passes but missed the Z-score for the state course you wanted.

  • You learn better by doing projects than by sitting long exams.

  • You want to start working sooner, with the option to finish a degree later.

  • You want to spread the cost of a degree over two clear stages.

It suits you less if you already know you want a specific four-year honours degree for a profession that registers its members, such as engineering. In that case, check the registration rules first.

What each campus lists

Computing and cyber security

CIC lists an HND in Computing (Cyber Security) over 18 months, hybrid, and an HND in Computing (Software Engineering) listed at one year. Both ask for at least 2 A/L passes in any stream, or a recognised foundation in IT. CIC also lists an HND in Computing (Network Engineering) and an HND in Digital Technologies focused on AI solutions.

Business, accounting and marketing

CIC lists three business HNDs, each 18 months and hybrid: Business Management, Accounting and Finance and Entrepreneurship and Small Businesses. Entry is 2 A/L passes in any stream or a foundation in business.

AIBS lists a BTEC HND in Accounting and Finance, awarded by Pearson, over 18 months full-time or 20 months part-time. It asks for 6 O/L passes including English and Mathematics and 3 A/L passes in any stream. AIBS also lists a BTEC HND in Marketing and a BTEC HND in Food Science and Technology.

An HND inside a degree

Some Esoft Uni degrees build the HND into the first two years. The Esoft engineering course record, for example, notes that a student can exit after Year 2 with an HND. Ask about this if you want a safety net built into a three-year degree.

How an HND becomes a degree

Because an HND covers the first two years, the usual next step is a one-year top-up degree. You enter the final year of a bachelor's and complete it. Our guide to the top-up degree in Sri Lanka walks through how that works and what to check.

Before you enrol in any HND, ask the campus two questions:

  1. Which top-up degrees, at which universities, accept this exact HND?

  2. Can the top-up be studied here in Sri Lanka, and who awards it?

A clear answer to both means your route to a degree is mapped from day one.

Choosing between HNDs

Four checks keep the decision simple:

  1. Field first. Pick the subject you can see yourself working in. Computing, cyber security and accounting HNDs lead to very different first jobs.

  2. Awarding body. Confirm the HND is a Pearson BTEC Higher National, or find out who awards it if not.

  3. Study mode. Hybrid suits students who work. Full-time suits students who want to finish fast.

  4. Top-up link. Confirm the degree you would top up to.

If you are still choosing a field, the software engineering degree comparison and the cyber security degree guide show where each subject can lead.

Frequently asked questions

Is an HND equal to a degree in Sri Lanka?

No. An HND equals the first two years of a degree, according to Pearson. You complete a degree by adding a top-up year.

Can I do an HND with only O/L results?

Most HNDs on Uplift ask for A/L passes. With O/Ls only, a foundation programme is usually the first step, and some campuses accept a foundation in place of A/Ls.

How long does an HND take?

Most HNDs on Uplift run for 18 months. Some are listed at one year, and part-time options can take longer.

Can I work while studying an HND?

Hybrid HNDs, such as those CIC lists, mix online and campus sessions, which can make working alongside study easier. Confirm the timetable with the campus.

Who awards an HND in Sri Lanka?

Most are awarded by Pearson in the UK and taught by a local campus. The Uplift course page names the awarding body where the campus has supplied it.

PS. If your A/L results opened a different door than you planned, an HND keeps your options moving. Pick two HNDs from the list above, then ask each campus which top-up degree it leads to.
