TL;DR: International business degrees in Sri Lanka differ in who awards them, how long they take and what they add to the core business subjects. The routes on Uplift today include a BSc at AIBS awarded by Edge Hill University, a BA at Universal College Lanka awarded by the University of Lancashire, and a two-year transfer programme at Nawaloka College.

Many students like the idea of working across borders. They want to understand global trade, cross-cultural teams and emerging markets, without leaving Sri Lanka to start. This guide compares the routes listed on Uplift using the same criteria: who awards the degree, how long it takes, what you need to get in and what is special about each one.

What an international business degree teaches

An international business degree is a business degree with a global lens. You study strategy, marketing, operations, people management and finance, and you apply them to companies that trade, hire or source across countries. Typical topics include business strategy, sustainability and ethics, doing business in emerging markets, cross-cultural people management and supply chains.

If you are still comparing business routes in general, start with our guide to the business management degree in Sri Lanka.

Business degrees on Uplift

BSc (Hons) International Business at AIBS

The Asian Institute of Business and Science (AIBS) in Colombo runs this three-year, full-time degree. Edge Hill University in the UK awards it, and the course page says Pearson Edexcel UK approves the programme.

The syllabus covers business management, marketing, human resource management, operations management, accounting and finance, entrepreneurship, business law and international business. Teaching mixes academic study with practical coursework and projects.

To join you need six O/L passes including English and Mathematics, plus three A/L passes in any stream, or an equivalent qualification. The course page lists a September intake. Confirm the exact date and the fee with AIBS, because neither is listed in full on the page.

AIBS also teaches science: see our guide to the biotechnology degree at AIBS.

BA (Hons) International Business at Universal College Lanka

Universal College Lanka offers this degree, and the University of Lancashire in the UK awards it. It runs for three years, or four years if you add a work placement year.

Its distinctive feature is a partnership with CIMA. Students can fit the CIMA qualification into their studies through the CGMA Finance Leadership Programme. This suits students who see themselves in finance leadership roles inside international companies.

The modules include Business Strategy, Contemporary Issues in Sustainability, Doing Business in Emerging Markets, The Future of Work, Cross-Cultural People Management, and Operations and Supply Chain Management. A Business and Management Project closes the course.

Entry needs two A/L passes at S grade in any stream, or two D grades at Edexcel or Cambridge A/L. You also need a C grade in O/L English and a B grade in A/L General English. The course page lists intakes in January, July and September, so check which one is open when you apply. Read the full BA (Hons) International Business course page. No fee is listed there today, so ask the college.

USA Degree Transfer Program at Nawaloka College

Nawaloka College of Higher Studies takes a different approach. In its 2+2 programme you complete up to two years, worth 60 credits, of a US-style degree in Colombo. You then transfer to a partner university in the United States or Canada to finish. A 1+3 option lets you move after one year.

This is a pathway built into the programme, so it suits students who already plan to complete their degree at one of the named partner universities. You choose a major in Year 3. Entry needs five O/L passes at C or above including English and Mathematics, and English proficiency through an O/L C pass or an IELTS overall band of 5.5 with no band below 5.0. You can apply with O/L or A/L results. Start dates change, so ask the college for the next one. See the programme page for details.

How the routes compare

Where you finish

The AIBS and Universal College Lanka degrees are completed in full in Sri Lanka, with a UK university as the awarding body. The Nawaloka programme is built to be completed partly overseas, so it is a different kind of decision.

Entry level

AIBS asks for the strongest O/L record (six passes). The Universal College Lanka degree asks for two A/L passes and set English grades. Nawaloka accepts students after O/Ls or A/Ls.

Special feature

AIBS covers a broad set of business subjects. Universal College Lanka adds the CIMA link and an optional placement year. Nawaloka offers the transfer structure.

What to ask before you apply

  1. What is the current tuition fee and the payment plan?

  2. When is the next intake and the application deadline?

  3. Which university awards the degree, and what does the certificate say?

  4. Is a placement year available, and who arranges it?

  5. How do graduates of the course find work?

Frequently asked questions

Is an international business degree different from a business management degree?

It covers the same core subjects, with extra attention to global markets, cross-cultural management and international trade.

Which route needs the lowest A/L grades?

AIBS asks for three A/L passes in any stream. Universal College Lanka asks for two S passes. Nawaloka accepts students after O/Ls.

Do I need to leave Sri Lanka to finish?

Not for the AIBS and Universal College Lanka degrees. The Nawaloka programme is designed to finish at a partner university overseas.

Are fees listed on Uplift?

Not for these courses today. Ask each institute for its current fee.

PS. Compare the course pages side by side, shortlist two routes, and apply through Uplift once the fee and intake are confirmed: view the AIBS course page.
