TL;DR: The BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering at ESOFT Uni in Colombo is a full-time degree awarded by Kingston University (UK). It lists a tuition fee of LKR 1,420,000 in total, takes A/L students after three passes, and also admits HND holders into the final year.

Apply now for the BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineers design the machines and systems that factories, power plants, buildings and vehicles depend on. If you like physics, mathematics and working out how things move, this is the degree that turns that interest into a profession. This guide explains how the ESOFT Uni course is built, who can join, what it costs and how to take the next step.

What the degree covers

The course is a three-year, full-time programme taught on the ESOFT Uni campus in Colombo. Kingston University in the UK awards the degree.

The early modules build the base: engineering mathematics, engineering design, mechanics and materials, and the fundamentals of thermodynamics and heat engines. You also meet automation, robotics and PLC control, along with instrumentation and electrical machines.

The middle of the course goes deeper into the technical core:

  • Thermofluids and advanced mechanical principles

  • Computational modelling in virtual engineering

  • Industrial systems and embedded systems

  • Further control systems engineering

  • Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC)

The final stage adds applied business management, dynamics and control, and an industry-focused research project. In that project you apply theory to a real engineering problem, with attention to innovation, sustainability and safety.

Who can join

There are two entry routes, and you need only one of them.

Direct entry after A/Ls

You need three passes at the Sri Lankan A/L. Mathematics, Physics or Combined Mathematics is preferred, although the course page does not state it as an absolute rule. An equivalent foundation qualification is also accepted. If you are still weighing a foundation year first, read our guide to the foundation programme in Sri Lanka.

Entry into the final year

If you hold an HND or an equivalent Level 5 qualification in mechanical or a related engineering subject, you may be eligible to join the last year as a top-up. Our explainer on the top-up degree in Sri Lanka shows how that route works.

English

English language proficiency is required. The course page does not name a specific test or score, so ask the institute what evidence it accepts.

Fees and intakes

The tuition fee listed on Uplift is LKR 1,420,000 in total for the course. A separate application fee of LKR 25,000 is also listed. The fee data on the course page can change, so confirm the current figure with the institute before you plan your budget.

No intake date is listed on the course page today. Check the next start date on the course page or with ESOFT Uni before you apply, and ask about the application deadline at the same time.

Flexible exit and progression options

The programme includes an HND exit point after the second year. That means you have a recognised qualification in hand even if your plans change. The course page also mentions the possibility of transferring to a UK partner university, so ask the institute how that option works and what it costs if it matters to you.

What mechanical engineers do

Graduates work in manufacturing, energy, construction services, automation and maintenance. The HVAC and thermofluids modules point towards building services and energy work. The automation, control and embedded systems modules point towards industrial plants and robotics. Choose your final-year project topic with the job you want in mind, because it becomes your strongest talking point at interviews.

Engineering is a profession where recognition matters. Ask the institute how the degree is recognised and what professional membership routes graduates usually follow. How to apply

  1. Open the course page and read the entry requirements again.

  2. Collect your A/L results, O/L results and ID.

  3. Ask the institute for the next intake date and the current fee schedule.

  4. Submit your application through Uplift.
