TL;DR The BEng (Hons) in Electronic and Communication Engineering is a Kingston University (UK) degree taught in Sri Lanka at ESOFT Uni. It runs for three years full-time, and the tuition fee on the Uplift record is LKR 1,420,000, with a separate LKR 25,000 application fee. A student who already holds a relevant HND can ask about entering the final year.

Apply now

Phones, home internet, hospital equipment and the sensors inside a modern building all depend on electronic and communication engineers. If you enjoy circuits, signals and the question of how information moves from one device to another, this degree is built around that field. This guide covers what the degree teaches, who can enter, what it costs and the questions worth asking ESOFT before you decide.

What the degree covers

Electronic and communication engineers design the systems that carry information: wireless networks, mobile communications, satellite links, IoT devices and high-speed data transmission. The course page names defence, healthcare and smart infrastructure as sectors that use this work.

The degree builds a base in mathematics, physics, circuit theory, electromagnetics and computer engineering. It then applies that base to digital and analogue communications, signal processing, embedded systems, wireless networks, and antenna and microwave engineering.

The early years

The first two years combine general engineering with the electronics core. Modules include Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Science, Engineering Design, Electrical and Electronic Principles and Telecommunication Principles. Students also study Automation, Robotics and PLC, Instrumentation and Control Systems, and Electrical Machines.

The second year adds Embedded Systems, Analogue Electronic Systems, Industrial Systems and Further Control Systems Engineering, along with a Research Project and Professional Engineering Management.

The final year

The last year includes Optical Fibre Communication and IoT, Instrumentation, Control and Group Project, and an Individual Project. Students also choose an elective such as Electrical Systems Design and Installation, or Renewable Energy Systems and Energy Management.

The degree is awarded by Kingston University (UK) and delivered at ESOFT campuses in Sri Lanka.

Who can enter

The course record gives two academic routes. A student needs one of them, plus English language proficiency.

Starting from A/Ls

Sri Lanka A/L with three passes is the direct route. Mathematics, Physics or Combined Mathematics is preferred, and an equivalent foundation qualification is also accepted. The record says the subjects are preferred, and it does not say whether they are compulsory, so ask ESOFT how they treat a student with a different subject mix.

Starting from an HND

An HND or equivalent Level 5 qualification in Electronic, Electrical or Communication Engineering may allow direct entry to the final year, which the course calls the top-up year. Ask ESOFT how it assesses a specific HND for this entry.

The record does not name an English test or a score. Ask ESOFT which evidence it accepts.

Fees

The tuition fee recorded on Uplift is LKR 1,420,000 in total, listed for weekday or weekend study. The application fee is LKR 25,000. The record advises students to confirm the current figures with ESOFT, because fee schedules are revised.

When you budget, include the application fee, lab and project costs the institute may charge, and living costs for the full length of the degree. Ask ESOFT for a written fee schedule and a payment plan before you apply.

The HND exit point

One feature of this degree is its flexible exit point. Students may leave after the second year with an HND, and may later return to complete the final year. The course page also says students can choose to continue the remaining year with a UK partner university after finishing the first two years in Sri Lanka. That is a feature of the programme's own structure, and the arrangement should be confirmed with ESOFT in writing before you rely on it.

Careers

The course record lists roles such as communications engineer, embedded systems engineer, RF and microwave engineer, signal processing engineer and wireless network engineer. These are the roles the institute associates with the degree. They are not a promise of a job, so look at job advertisements in Sri Lanka for the skills employers ask for and match them against the module list.

If you are comparing engineering routes more widely, the guide to the electrical engineering degree route and the guide to Kingston University degrees at ESOFT Uni explain how neighbouring programmes are structured.

Questions to ask before you apply

  1. Do my A/L subjects meet the entry preference, or will I need a foundation year?

  2. Which English evidence does ESOFT accept?

  3. What is the next start date and the application deadline?

  4. How is the fee paid across the three years?

  5. If I leave after the second year with an HND, how do I return for the final year?

Common questions

Who awards the degree?

Kingston University (UK) awards it. ESOFT delivers the teaching in Sri Lanka.

Can I study without Physics at A/L?

The record prefers Mathematics, Physics or Combined Mathematics but does not say they are mandatory. Ask ESOFT about your own subject combination.

Is there a foundation route?

The entry route accepts an equivalent foundation qualification. The guide to the engineering foundation year explains the options.
