TL;DR: An electrical engineering degree in Sri Lanka can be studied as the BEng (Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Esoft Uni, awarded by Kingston University in the UK. It runs for 3 years full-time, with total tuition of LKR 1,420,000 plus a LKR 25,000 application fee. You need 3 A/L passes, ideally in Mathematics and Physics. HND holders can join the final year.

Power cuts, solar rooftops, factory robots and the phone in your pocket all need the same skill set: people who understand circuits, control and power. If that pulls at you, an electrical engineering degree is the obvious next step.

This guide covers one route you can apply for today through Uplift: the Kingston University BEng taught at Esoft Uni in Sri Lanka. It sets out what you study, what it costs, who can get in and what to check before you sign up.

The course at a glance

The Uplift catalogue lists the BEng (Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Esoft Uni with these details:

  • Taught by Esoft Uni, at its campuses in Sri Lanka.

  • Awarded by Kingston University (UK).

  • Three years, full-time.

  • Total tuition of LKR 1,420,000, plus a LKR 25,000 application fee.

  • Entry with 3 A/L passes, preferably Mathematics, Physics or Combined Mathematics, or a matching foundation.

  • Final-year entry with an HND or Level 5 qualification in electrical, electronic or a related field.

The list below shows this degree alongside the other engineering degrees on Uplift, with an Apply now button on each.

What you study

The course record lists a practical spread of subjects. Expect engineering mathematics and electrical and electronic principles early on, then control systems, power systems, embedded systems, signal processing and instrumentation.

Later modules move into industrial automation, HVAC and renewable energy systems, ending with individual and group projects. For a country putting solar panels on rooftops and automating its factories, that mix is well matched to local jobs.

Who can get in

There are two doors in.

From A/Ls

You need 3 A/L passes. Mathematics, Physics or Combined Mathematics are preferred, which makes the Physical Science stream the natural fit. If your subjects do not match, an equivalent foundation qualification is accepted. English proficiency is also required.

From an HND

If you already hold an HND or another Level 5 qualification in electrical, electronic or a related engineering field, you can enter Year 3. That final year covers systems design, control, renewable energy and an individual project.

The course record also notes a safety net: a student can exit after Year 2 with an HND.

What it costs

The Uplift catalogue lists total tuition of LKR 1,420,000 for the three years, plus a LKR 25,000 application fee. Ask Esoft Uni how the tuition is split into payments, and whether the fee changes for final-year entry. No intake date is currently listed, so confirm the next start date on the course page.

Jobs it can lead to in Sri Lanka

The course record lists roles as electrical engineers, electronics engineers, control systems engineers, power systems engineers and embedded systems engineers. These sit across energy, manufacturing and technology, all sectors that hire inside Sri Lanka.

Is this degree right for you?

Ask yourself three honest questions before you apply.

  1. Do you enjoy Physics and Mathematics? Circuits, signals and power systems are built on both. If Combined Mathematics was a struggle, a foundation year first can rebuild the base.

  2. Do you like building and testing things? The course ends with individual and group projects, so hands-on work counts for a lot.

  3. Do you want a three-year route? This BEng runs for three years full-time. If you already hold a related HND, the final-year entry route can cut that to one year.

If the answer to all three is yes, you are a strong fit.

One check before you enrol

If your goal is to be registered or chartered as an engineer in Sri Lanka, check how this degree is treated for that before you enrol. The Engineering Council Sri Lanka was set up under the Engineering Council Sri Lanka Act No. 4 of 2017 to register engineering practitioners in different categories, and the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka handles chartered membership.

Ask Esoft Uni, and the two bodies if needed, which registration category this BEng leads to and what further steps you would take. It is better to know the full path before your first lecture.

Our wider guide to engineering degrees in Sri Lanka explains how the main bachelor's routes differ.

More from Esoft Uni

Esoft Uni lists a sister course, the BEng (Hons) in Electronic and Communication Engineering, also awarded by Kingston University, with the same length, entry rules and listed fees. It leans towards communication systems rather than power.

Frequently asked questions
