TL;DR ESOFT Uni in Colombo teaches a BEng (Hons) in Biomedical Engineering awarded by London Metropolitan University in the UK. It comes as a full degree and as a top-up year for students who already hold an HND or equivalent. Both are listed on Uplift with fees. Pick the route by your starting qualification.

Biomedical engineering joins engineering with human biology. The field is about the devices and systems used in health care. It suits students who enjoy both biology and mathematics at school, because the degree uses both from the first semester.

What you study

The program page describes subjects such as biology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, electrical and electronic principles, basics of medical instrumentation, nanomaterials, polymer science and programming. The course structure lists modules including Engineering Design, Anatomy and Human Physiology, Introduction to Biomedical Engineering, Further Mathematics, Medical Instrumentation, Polymer Materials and Properties and Robotics.

The final year moves to advanced topics: wireless networks, AI applications in healthcare, medical device life cycle management and computer vision.

The full degree route

The full BEng (Hons) in Biomedical Engineering is listed as 3 years full-time at ESOFT Uni in Colombo. The tuition fee is LKR 1,620,000 in total, and the application fee is listed separately at LKR 25,000. The degree is awarded directly by London Metropolitan University.

Who can enter

The program page gives two entry routes:

  • With a Sri Lankan O/L qualification, you enter through the Foundation Diploma in Applied Sciences (UK Level 3). The page says this is accepted as an alternative to A/Ls. Ask ESOFT how long the foundation stage adds before the degree years begin.

  • With Sri Lankan A/L Science stream results (three passes) or an equivalent qualification, you may apply for direct entry.

English language proficiency is required in both cases.

The one-year top-up route

The BEng (Hons) in Biomedical Engineering (Top-Up) is a one-year, part-time, final-year program for students who have already completed an HND or equivalent. The tuition fee is listed at LKR 850,000 in total, with the same LKR 25,000 application fee.

Who can enter

The page asks for a relevant HND, foundation degree or equivalent Level 5 qualification in Biomedical Engineering, Electronic Engineering or a closely related discipline. It also asks for a strong background in engineering and life sciences, and English language proficiency.

What the top-up covers

The listed modules are Wireless Networks, Computer Vision, IoT Systems and Security, Medical Devices and Equipment Life Cycle, Anatomy and Physiology 2, and a final project. The page says the project lets you apply your knowledge to a real-world challenge in an area you choose.

Questions to ask ESOFT before you apply

The program records do not cover everything a student needs to decide. Put these questions to the institute in writing and keep the answers:

  • Which intake can I join, and what is the application deadline for it?

  • If I enter through the Foundation Diploma, how long is that stage and what does it cost?

  • Which professional bodies recognise the degree for work in Sri Lanka?

  • Can the top-up be done while I am working, and on which days are classes held?

  • What laboratory and practical facilities are available on campus?

Fees at a glance

  • Full degree: LKR 1,620,000 total tuition, plus an LKR 25,000 application fee.

  • Top-up year: LKR 850,000 total tuition, plus an LKR 25,000 application fee.

The page lists USD fees as well for international applicants. Ask ESOFT what the tuition includes, and whether any exam or registration charges are billed separately.

Which route fits you

  • Choose the full degree if you are starting from O/Ls or A/L Science and want the whole degree in one program.

  • Choose the top-up if you already hold a relevant Level 5 qualification and want to complete your honours degree in a year.

  • If you are unsure which applies to you, ask ESOFT to confirm your entry level before you pay the application fee.

FAQ

Is the degree awarded by a UK university?

Yes. The program record lists London Metropolitan University as the awarding institute, and the program is taught at ESOFT Uni in Colombo.

Do I need A/L Science to enter?

Not necessarily. O/L students can enter through the Foundation Diploma in Applied Sciences. A/L Science students with three passes may apply for direct entry.

Can I take the top-up with a different HND?

The page asks for a relevant Level 5 qualification in biomedical or electronic engineering or a closely related field. ESOFT confirms whether your HND qualifies.

Where do I check the current intake?

Intake dates are shown on the course page when the institute has published them. If none is shown, ask ESOFT directly.
