TL;DR: Health science study in Sri Lanka starts at different points depending on your results. After O/Ls you can look at a caregiver certificate or a laboratory assistant certificate, both listed at NVQ Level 03. After A/Ls, Biology stream students can choose a PreBiomed bridge, a diploma, or a bachelor's degree in biomedical science or acupuncture.

Health is a wide field. Some students want to work in a laboratory, some in patient care, some in research, and some are still deciding. Because the entry points differ, the right first step depends on whether you have O/L results, A/L results or a working background.

Start with your results

The rows below are health science options on Uplift. Each links to its course page and application form.

After O/Ls: certificates

Certificate Course in Laboratory Assistant

KIU University lists this as a TVEC-certified Advanced Certificate Course at NVQ Level 03. It covers basic laboratory techniques and equipment, plus the practical and clerical skills needed in biomedical, clinical or research laboratories. Entry asks for a C pass in Science and an S pass in English at O/L. See the Certificate Course in Laboratory Assistant at KIU.

Caregiver Certificate Course

KIU lists this as a 3 month full-time certificate accredited by TVEC at NVQ Level 03, with intakes throughout the year. Entry asks for an S pass in O/L English, basic literacy and numeracy, and good physical and emotional health. It prepares learners to deliver safe, compassionate, person-centred care. See the Caregiver Certificate Course at KIU.

After A/Ls: bridge and diploma

PreBiomed Program

Asian Institute of Business and Science lists a 2 month PreBiomed Program with a total tuition fee of LKR 40,000. It is written for Biology stream students after A/Ls and covers laboratory techniques, food science, drug and pharmaceutical technology, human anatomy and molecular biology. Students use it to prepare for a life sciences degree. See the PreBiomed Program at AIBS.

Diploma of Health Science

Nawaloka College of Higher Studies lists an 8 months full-time Diploma of Health Science, awarded by Swinburne University of Technology. The total tuition fee is LKR 1,083,000, with an application fee of LKR 150,000. Core units cover human biology, global health, public health and human nutrition. The record lists graduate roles such as health communication officer and hospital scientist as possible directions. Entry asks for A/L completion in a minimum of three subjects and a set English level. See the Diploma of Health Science (UniLink) at NCHS.

After A/Ls: bachelor's degrees

Biomedical science

KIU lists a 4 years full-time BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science for students with three A/L passes in the Bioscience stream. AIBS lists a 3 years full-time BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science with Edge Hill University as the awarding institute, for students with three A/L passes in the Science stream. Read our full guide to the biomedical science degree in Sri Lanka.

Acupuncture

KIU lists a 4 years full-time BSc Honours in Medical Science in Acupuncture, which needs three A/L passes in the Biological Science stream. See the BSc Honours in Medical Science in Acupuncture at KIU page.

Nursing

Nursing has its own routes for school leavers and for working nurses. Start with the guides to the BSc nursing degree in Sri Lanka and the master of nursing in Sri Lanka.

Which route suits which student

You want to work soon

The two NVQ Level 03 certificates are the shortest listed routes. They suit students who want practical skills in caregiving or laboratory work and who can start after O/Ls.

You want a degree but need time to decide

A bridge or a diploma gives you a lower commitment first step. The PreBiomed Program is short and low in cost as listed. The Diploma of Health Science is a full university style year.

You are sure about a laboratory or research career

Go straight to a bachelor's degree in biomedical science, and confirm which A/L stream is required.

How to choose

  1. Write down your O/L and A/L results and the stream you studied.

  2. Match each result to the entry requirement on the course page.

  3. Decide whether you want to work soon (certificate), prepare for a degree (bridge or diploma) or commit to a full degree.

  4. Check the fee and intake date with the institute, because the catalogue does not show both for every program.

Frequently asked questions

Which health science option needs the lowest entry grades?

The caregiver certificate asks for an S pass in O/L English, plus basic literacy and numeracy. Read each page for the full list.

Can Commerce or Arts students enter health science?

Some programs list any stream, such as the diploma route at NCHS, which asks for completion of three A/L subjects. Degrees in biomedical science ask for Biology or Science stream passes.

Is there a bridge for students unsure about the degree?

The PreBiomed Program and the Diploma of Health Science both serve this purpose, at different lengths and fees.

How do I check a certificate is recognised?

The caregiver and laboratory assistant pages state TVEC accreditation at NVQ Level 03. Confirm the current status with TVEC or the institute.
