TL;DR The BSc (Hons) Software Engineering at Lanka Nippon BizTech Institute, known as LNBTI, is a four-year full-time honours degree for students with A/L results. It is approved by the Ministry of Education under the Universities Act and includes Japanese language instruction alongside the software engineering modules. Students from any A/L stream can enter, with a bridging course for those outside Physical Science and ICT.

Software engineering students usually look first at the subjects and the entry rules. This program adds a Japanese language strand and a curriculum the institute says it builds around international computing standards. This guide explains what the program covers, who can enter, and what to check before you apply.

What the degree is

The program is a four-year honours degree delivered on the LNBTI campus at 278 High Level Road, Maharagama. According to the program page, it is approved by the Ministry of Education under the Universities Act and designed to produce graduates who meet both local and international academic standards.

The curriculum is described as being developed in line with the undergraduate computing curriculum guidelines of the Association for Computing Machinery and the IEEE, together with the Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework and the JF Standard for Japanese Language Education. In plain terms, the technical content follows widely used international guidelines, and the Japanese language strand follows a recognised teaching standard.

The Japanese language strand

Japanese language and cultural orientation are built into the degree. The program page lists a Japanese cultural orientation unit in the bridging stage and Japanese Language Level I and Level II in the first two semesters, marked as non-GPA units, which means they do not count towards your grade point average. The program page says this gives graduates a skill set suited to the Japanese IT job market, while also preparing them for local careers, self-employment and postgraduate study.

If you have no interest in Japanese, think carefully before choosing this program, because the language strand is part of the structure, not an optional extra.

What you study

The early units cover the foundations of software work. The program page lists, among others:

  • Computer Fundamentals and Programming Fundamentals

  • Technologies for Web Development and Fundamentals of Multimedia

  • Technical Writing and Communication Skills

  • Mathematics for software engineering

  • Database Systems and Object Oriented Modelling and Development

Later study covers software architecture, testing and quality assurance, data mining and machine learning, and networking. The degree also includes project work and industrial training.

The bridging stage

The program page lists a bridging stage before the main semesters, with five units: Japanese Cultural Orientation, Computational Thinking, Foundation Mathematics, English and Communication Skills, and Communication Skills. For students who did not study Physical Science or ICT at A/L, this stage is where the gap in background is addressed. The institute also describes modern classrooms, a library and e-learning facilities on its Maharagama campus.

Entry requirements

The entry rules on the program page work in two routes, and both need O/L credit passes.

  • Route one: three simple passes at A/L in the Physical Science or ICT subject streams, all in the same sitting, or an equivalent qualification.

  • Route two: three simple passes at A/L in any stream, all in the same sitting, together with a bridging course approved by the Specified Authority. This route is meant for Arts, Commerce, Biological Science and Technology students.

  • On both routes you need credit passes in Mathematics and English at O/L.

There is a useful concession. A student who has not yet met the O/L Mathematics and English requirement can still enrol, but must complete it within the first year of the degree. Passes spread across two sittings do not count, so check your A/L results carefully against the same-sitting rule.

Cost and payment

Uplift does not currently list a tuition fee for this program. The institute states that fees vary by program and intake, and that it offers installment plans and assists with approved student bank loan schemes. Ask LNBTI for the current fee and a written payment schedule through the course page before you decide.

No intake dates are listed on the Uplift record at the moment, so confirm the next start date and the application deadline with the institute.

Planning the four years

A four-year full-time degree is a long commitment, so plan the practical side early: travel to Maharagama, how you will pay each term, and how the Japanese units fit alongside your computing workload. Speaking to a current student or a counsellor at the institute is a good way to test whether the daily routine suits you.

Questions to ask LNBTI

  1. Which bridging course applies to my A/L stream, and when does it run?

  2. How are the Japanese language units assessed, and do I need prior knowledge?

  3. What are the current fee, the installment options and the bank loan process?

  4. How is industrial training arranged, and who finds the placement?

  5. When is the next intake and the application deadline?

Is it the right fit?

This degree suits a student who wants a full-time, four-year honours program with a distinctive language strand, and who is comfortable studying on a campus in Maharagama.
