TL;DR. Colombo International Campus (CIC) offers an HND in Digital Technologies with an Artificial Intelligence Solutions and Applications focus. It runs for 18 months in a hybrid format at the Colombo 08 campus. Entry is two A/L passes plus O/L passes in Mathematics and English, or a recognised computing foundation qualification.

Apply now or open the programme page: HND in Digital Technologies (Artificial Intelligence Solutions and Applications) at CIC.

Artificial intelligence now shows up in banks, hospitals, marketing teams and retail. Students leaving school often ask whether they can start in this field without a full four-year degree. An HND is one practical answer: a shorter, applied qualification that can lead to work or to a degree later.

Other HNDs at the same campus

CIC lists several computing HNDs. The programs below show the options in the same study area, so you can see how the AI focus differs from software engineering, networking and cyber security.

What an HND in AI is

A Higher National Diploma is a vocational qualification that sits between a certificate and a bachelor's degree. This one blends core computing with applied AI, data, cloud and cybersecurity topics. The course page describes it as project-based, so you spend time building AI applications rather than only reading about them.

If you are new to HNDs in general, our guide HND in Sri Lanka explains how they work.

What you will learn

The course page lists six learning outcomes.

  • Apply AI and machine learning fundamentals to real-world problems.

  • Develop and program AI-driven applications.

  • Analyse, manage and visualise large datasets.

  • Deploy AI solutions using cloud platforms.

  • Understand cybersecurity principles for protecting AI systems and data.

  • Use digital technologies to drive innovation and business change.

Skills this builds

The listed skills are artificial intelligence, machine learning fundamentals, programming, data analysis, big data visualisation, cloud computing, cybersecurity awareness and problem solving. Detailed module information is not published on the Uplift page, so ask CIC for the module list before you apply.

Do you need to know programming first?

The course page says a foundation in computing or mathematics helps, but the programme is designed to build programming and AI skills step by step from core principles. You do not need to arrive as a programmer.

Entry requirements

There are two ways in.

  • G.C.E. or London A/Ls with at least two passes, together with O/L passes in Mathematics and English.

  • An internationally recognised foundation qualification in Computing.

Basic English proficiency is required. IELTS or PTE is not mandatory unless the provider specifies it, and the page does not say how basic proficiency is assessed. Confirm that with CIC.

Duration and study mode

The programme takes 18 months and is listed as hybrid. The campus address on the intake record is 24/1 Dudley Senanayake Mawatha, Colombo 08.

Fees and intakes

The Uplift catalogue does not list a fee for this program, and the intake date on record has passed. Check the current fee and the next intake directly with CIC through the programme page. Do not rely on a figure from a friend or an old brochure.

Choosing between an HND and a degree

The two are not rivals so much as different speeds. An HND at 18 months gets you into applied work sooner and costs less time. A bachelor's degree takes longer but reaches a higher level directly. Many students start with an HND and move on to a top-up later, once they know the field suits them.

Ask yourself how sure you are about AI as a career. If you are sure, a degree may be the stronger long-term base. If you want to test the field first with a shorter commitment, the HND is a reasonable start.

Build something while you study

AI roles are hired on evidence. Keep every project you build, write a short description of the problem, the data you used and what the model got right and wrong, and host the work where an employer can read it. A small portfolio from an 18-month programme counts for more than a list of module names.

Where it can lead

The course page names roles such as AI Developer, Machine Learning Engineer, Data Analyst, Cloud AI Specialist and Digital Transformation Consultant. Treat these as the direction the programme is built for. An HND is an entry-level qualification, so the first job is more likely to be a junior or support role, and further study or experience builds toward the senior titles.

If you later want a degree, a top-up or a bachelor's can build on an HND. Our guide top-up degrees in Sri Lanka covers that route.

Degrees to look at next

For students who want to compare with bachelor's programs in computing, these are listed on Uplift from several institutes.

Questions to ask before you apply

  1. Which modules make up the AI specialisation?

  2. How is basic English proficiency assessed for entry?

  3. What is the current fee, and can it be paid in instalments?

  4. When is the next intake, and what is the application deadline?

PS. If AI is the field you want, ask CIC which projects students complete, because those are what you will show an employer. Apply now when you have the answers.
