TL;DR: The Australian Foundation Year (AFY) at the Asian Institute of Business and Science (AIBS) is a 10-month full-time pre-university program for students who have finished O/Ls or an AS Level. You study one of four streams in Sri Lanka, and AIBS states that completing it gives guaranteed entry to a Diploma at an Australian higher education institute, equal to the first year of a university degree.

Some students want a structured first step after O/Ls that is shorter than the A/L route and leads straight into a university-linked Diploma. The AFY is built for that. This guide explains what the Sri Lankan part of the program involves, who can join and what to ask AIBS before you apply.

Apply now or keep reading for the full picture.

How the pathway is structured

The program has two stages, and the record on Uplift is clear about both.

  • Stage one is the Australian Foundation Year itself, taught at AIBS in Sri Lanka over 10 months, full-time.

  • Stage two is a Diploma at a partner Australian higher education institute. AIBS names Navitas Colleges and other institutes affiliated to universities, and describes the Diploma as equivalent to the first year of a university degree.

Only stage one is delivered in Sri Lanka. If you are weighing this program, treat it as a foundation year with a defined next step, and ask AIBS which partner institutes and Diploma options are open to your stream.

Four streams to choose from

You choose one stream, and the modules change with it.

Business stream

English Language, Communication Skills, Introduction to Business, Introduction to Accounting, Contemporary Issues in Business, Introductory Computer Skills, Numerical Skills and Introduction to Economics.

Science stream

English Language, Communication Skills, Foundation for Biology, Introduction to Chemistry, Introductory Computer Skills, Introduction to Genetics, Introduction to Laboratory Techniques and Numerical Skills.

IT and Engineering streams

Both list English I and II, Numerical Skills, Introductory Computer Skills, Physics, Introduction to Chemistry, Introduction to Laboratory Techniques and Further Mathematics.

Across every stream the shared core is English, communication and numerical skills. That is deliberate: the year prepares you for the study habits and academic English that a Diploma expects.

Entry requirements

The academic requirement is one of the following:

  • A GCE O/Level qualification.

  • A GCE AS Level qualification.

No specific subjects or grades are named on the program record. English is handled inside the program: AIBS provides IELTS and English proficiency training, and the record does not state a minimum IELTS score for enrolment. Ask AIBS to confirm whether a score is needed for your chosen stream and partner institute.

Why students choose a foundation year

The AIBS page highlights a few features of the program:

  • Entry to a Diploma that carries university-level credit, after 10 months instead of the longer A/L route.

  • Blended delivery with individual attention from the lecture panel.

  • English and IELTS training built into the year.

These are the institute's own points. Whether the route suits you depends on your goals, your budget and the stream you want, so compare it with the other foundation options before you commit.

Fees and intakes

Uplift does not list a fee for this program, so check the current fee with AIBS on its Uplift page. The program page states intakes in August and February, so confirm the next start date with the institute when you enquire. If you want to understand how foundation fees are usually quoted, the guide on how to read and compare degree fees is a good starting point.

Questions to ask AIBS before you apply

  1. Which partner institutes accept graduates of my stream, and what Diploma programs follow?

  2. What does the guaranteed entry cover, and are there conditions such as a minimum result?

  3. Is a minimum IELTS score needed at enrolment or only later?

  4. What is the total cost of the foundation year, and can it be paid in instalments?

  5. When is the next intake, and when does the application close?

Common questions

How long is the program?

Ten months, full-time. That is the duration on the Uplift record. The program description also mentions a shorter period in one place, so confirm the exact length of study with AIBS.

Do I need A/Ls?

No. The entry requirement is a GCE O/Level or AS Level qualification. This is why the program is often compared with the A/L route as a shorter way to reach university-level study, though the two are not identical and lead to different next steps.

What does guaranteed entry mean?

AIBS states that students who complete the AFY successfully receive guaranteed entry to a Diploma at leading Australian higher education institutes affiliated to universities. Ask AIBS to put the conditions in writing, including any minimum result and which institutes are available for your stream.

Can I choose any stream?

The program is offered in Business, Science, IT and Engineering streams. Your choice should follow the Diploma you want to enter next, so decide the destination first and then pick the matching stream.
