TL;DR: Networking courses in Sri Lanka range from an HND at Colombo International Campus to a KIU degree in computer networks and cyber security. For graduates, ESOFT Uni lists a Kingston master's in network and information security. Pick by your qualification and the time you have.

Every company, bank and hospital runs on networks. Students often ask where they can learn to build and secure them without leaving Sri Lanka.

This guide lines up the networking routes on Uplift by level, so you can match one to your A/L results or your degree.

What a networking course teaches

Networking programs cover routing, switching, cloud infrastructure and network security. Some stay hands-on with labs, and others add a wider computing degree around the networking core.

HND routes at Colombo International Campus

The HND in Computing (Network Engineering) is described as training in routing, cloud infrastructure and network security. It lasts 18 months and is delivered in a hybrid format.

  • Entry: any A/L stream with at least two passes, or an internationally recognised foundation qualification in IT or computing.

  • English: basic proficiency. IELTS or PTE is not mandatory for entry.

The Pearson BTEC HND in Networking is a separate listing at the same campus. It asks for a relevant Level 3 qualification such as A/L or BTEC Level 3. English language proficiency may be required.

Open the HND in Computing (Network Engineering) page and the Pearson BTEC HND in Networking page for current details. Fees were not on these pages at the time of writing, so check them with the institute.

Degree route at KIU University

The BSc Hons in Computer Network and Cyber Security runs for four years, full-time. The entry rules on the page ask for at least three simple passes in the Physical Sciences or Engineering Technology stream at one sitting of the GCE A/L, or an equivalent qualification.

This route suits a student who wants one degree that covers both networks and security. See the KIU program page.

From HND to degree

An HND is not the end of the road. Many students finish an HND and then move to a top-up degree. Read our guides to the HND in Sri Lanka and the top-up degree route.

Master's route for graduates

The Master of Science in Network and Information Security from Kingston University (UK) is taught at ESOFT Uni in a hybrid format. The page asks for a relevant undergraduate degree in computing, IT, engineering or a related discipline, usually with second class honours or equivalent. Professional experience in networking or security is an advantage.

The tuition fee is LKR 790,000 in total, with a LKR 25,000 application fee. See the master's program page.

How to choose

  • A/L with two passes in any stream: start with the HND.

  • A/L in a science or technology stream and four years available: look at the KIU degree.

  • Already a graduate: compare the master's programs.

  • Cyber security is your main goal: see our cyber security degree guide.

Questions to ask before you apply

A course page tells you the basics. A short conversation with the institute tells you the rest. Before you pay anything, ask these questions.

  • Which networking tools and lab equipment will I use during the course?

  • Does the program prepare me for any industry certificate exams, and are exam fees included?

  • How many hours a week do I attend, and is any of it online?

  • What is the next step after this qualification, for example a top-up degree?

Write the answers next to the entry rules and fee on each page. Comparing two programs on the same five points is far more useful than comparing their names.

A note on cyber security overlap

Networking and cyber security share many topics, which is why several programs above appear under both. If you enjoy building networks more than defending them, read the module list on the program page and look for routing, switching and cloud topics. If defending systems interests you more, look for ethical hacking and incident response.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need maths for a networking course?

The HND entry rules do not ask for a particular stream. The KIU degree asks for the Physical Sciences or Engineering Technology stream or an equivalent.

How long does it take?

The HND listed here takes 18 months. The KIU degree takes four years.

Can I study while working?

Some programs are hybrid. Check the format on each page.

What do the fees look like?

Where a fee is listed it appears on the program page. Where it is missing, ask the institute through Uplift.

PS. Pick the level that matches what you hold today, open the program page and apply on Uplift.
