TL;DR: A cyber security degree in Sri Lanka can start straight after A/Ls, through an HND, or at master's level after a first degree. On Uplift you can compare three-year UK-awarded degrees, a four-year local honours degree, an 18-month HND and two master's programmes. Entry rules range from two A/L passes in any stream to three passes in Physical Science or Engineering Technology.
Every bank, telco, hospital and government office in Sri Lanka now runs on data. Since Parliament passed the Personal Data Protection Act No. 9 of 2022, organisations that handle personal data also carry legal duties to protect it. That is why cyber security has moved from a niche corner of IT to a subject students search for by name.
The question is which route fits you. Here is how the options on Uplift compare.
The main routes into cyber security
There are three ways in, depending on where you are now:
Straight after A/Ls: a three or four-year bachelor's degree.
Step by step: an HND first, then a top-up to a full degree later.
After a first degree: a one-year master's for graduates switching into security.
Bachelor's degrees after A/Ls
| Programme | Institute | Awarded by | Duration | Entry on Uplift | Fee on Uplift |
| BSc (Hons) Cyber Security | Universal College Lanka | University of Lancashire (UK) | 3 years, full-time | Local A/L 2 S passes in any stream, plus O/L English C or A/L General English B | Check the current fee on its Uplift page |
| BSc (Hons) in Cyber Security and Digital Forensics | Esoft Uni | Kingston University (UK) | 3 years | A/L with at least 3 passes, or relevant work experience | LKR 1,620,000 total tuition plus LKR 25,000 application fee |
| BSc Hons in Computer Network and Cyber Security | KIU University | KIU University | 4 years, full-time | 3 S passes in Physical Science or Engineering Technology, or other routes listed on its page | Check the current fee on its Uplift page |
A few points help you read this table.
Three years or four? Under the Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework, a three-year general bachelor's sits at level 5 with at least 90 credits, and a four-year honours degree sits at level 6 with at least 120 credits. The UK-awarded degrees follow the UK system, where a three-year honours degree is the norm.
Stream matters for some, not others. The BSc (Hons) Cyber Security at Universal College Lanka accepts any A/L stream. The KIU degree prefers Physical Science or Engineering Technology, but also lists routes for other streams with an O/L Mathematics credit and either an ICT pass or a bridging programme.
Specialism. The Esoft and Kingston University degree adds digital forensics, the work of investigating incidents after they happen. Its page also notes an HND exit point after year two.
The HND route
The HND in Computing (Cyber Security) at Colombo International Campus runs for 18 months in a hybrid format. Entry asks for at least two A/L passes in any stream, or a recognised foundation qualification in IT or computing.
An HND suits students who want a shorter first qualification, want to work sooner, or want to keep the option of topping up to a full degree later. If you are weighing HND against degree more broadly, our guide on what to do after A/L results lays out each pathway.
