TL;DR An early childhood education course in Sri Lanka can take you from a diploma or HND to an honours degree, and then to a master's. ESOFT Uni lists a BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies top-up and an MA Education in early childhood studies, both awarded by London Metropolitan University. This guide shows the entry rules, fees and the route from one level to the next.

Parents want trained people working with young children, and preschools want staff who understand how children learn. If you already work in a preschool, a daycare centre or a primary school, a university-level qualification is a way to build on that experience.

This guide explains the early childhood and education routes currently listed on Uplift, what each one asks for, and how to choose between them.

Routes listed on Uplift

The programs below cover the top-up degree, the master's in early childhood studies and the wider MA Education. Use the filters on each course page to check the current details.

Step one: the top-up degree

The BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies Top-Up is awarded by London Metropolitan University and delivered at ESOFT Uni. It runs for 1 year, part-time. The program record lists a total tuition fee of LKR 750,000 and an application fee of LKR 25,000.

A top-up builds on a qualification you already hold. The record lists a relevant foundation degree, a Higher National Diploma or an equivalent Level 5 qualification in early childhood, education or a related field. It also asks for experience working with young children in an educational or care setting, and English language proficiency.

The content looks at children's rights, well-being, inclusive practice, curriculum development and sustainable education. It draws on education, psychology, sociology and health.

See the course on the BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies Top-Up page at ESOFT Uni. If you are new to the top-up idea, our guide to turning an HND into a degree explains how it works.

Step two: the master's routes

MA Education (Early Childhood Studies)

This program is designed for practitioners and for people in roles such as management, policy, lecturing or advisory work. The record lists a total tuition fee of LKR 790,000 and an application fee of LKR 25,000. It asks for a relevant undergraduate degree with at least second class honours or equivalent. Experience in education or early childhood settings is an advantage, and English language proficiency may be required.

Central themes include equality, diversity, social justice and advocacy. Read more on the MA Education (Early Childhood Studies) page at ESOFT Uni.

MA Education

This broader program suits teachers and school leaders. It covers curriculum design, teaching and learning approaches, assessment, leadership in educational settings and research methods, and it ends with a dissertation. The record lists a total tuition fee of LKR 790,000 and the same entry wording as the early childhood version. See the MA Education page at ESOFT Uni.

Which level is right for you

  • If you hold a diploma or HND in early childhood or education and work with children, the top-up is the natural next step.

  • If you already hold a degree and want to move into management, policy or lecturing, the master's routes fit.

  • If you want a general teaching and leadership focus, choose the MA Education rather than the early childhood version.

The records do not list a duration for the master's programs, so check the course pages. They also do not list a current intake date for these programs, so confirm the next start with the institute.

Teaching in Sri Lanka and what these degrees do not replace

These programs award university qualifications. They do not by themselves replace any registration or training that a school, a preschool authority or the government may require for a particular post. Check the requirements for the role you want before you enrol. Our guide to the education degrees for teachers covers more routes.
