TL;DR. Data science courses in Sri Lanka range from short certificates to bachelor's degrees and master's programs, and the right one depends on your starting point: A/L results, a first degree or work experience. Uplift lists data science degrees and master's programs at ESOFT Uni, KIU University and Universal College Lanka, plus shorter routes at NIBM, with entry rules on each course page.

Data science combines statistics, programming and business questions. That mix makes the choice of course harder than it looks, because a certificate, a degree and a master's program serve different people. This guide separates the routes, using only what the Uplift course pages say.

What are the data science courses in Sri Lanka?

Uplift groups these programs under the computing study area and its child area, data science. The programs fall into three levels: bachelor's degrees for school leavers, master's programs for graduates and working professionals, and shorter certificate and diploma routes.

Bachelor's degrees

The BSc (Hons) in Data Science at ESOFT Uni runs for three years full-time in Colombo and is awarded by London Metropolitan University (UK). The page lists tuition of LKR 1,620,000 in total and an application fee of LKR 25,000. Entry asks for two passes at the A/L, or a relevant higher national diploma or foundation qualification. See our ESOFT Uni profile for the wider picture.

The BSc Honours in Data Science at KIU University runs for four years full-time at KIU Colombo. The page does not list a fee at the time of writing. Entry asks for the A/L or an equivalent, and recommends a foundation in mathematics or physical science. Read about KIU University before you apply.

Master's programs

The Master of Science in Data Science at ESOFT Uni is awarded by Kingston University (UK) and is delivered in a hybrid format. The page lists tuition of LKR 790,000 in total. Entry asks for a relevant undergraduate degree in computing, mathematics, science or a related field with at least second class honours or an equivalent, and some professional experience is an advantage.

The MSc Data Science at Universal College Lanka runs for 12 months full-time. The page does not list a tuition fee at the time of writing. Entry asks for a bachelor's degree with at least a second class lower division, or a professional qualification equivalent to a UK degree, such as CIMA or ACCA. See the Universal College Lanka profile.

Shorter routes

NIBM lists several shorter routes. The Advanced Certificate Course in Data Science is a six-month full-time course with tuition of LKR 60,000. It accepts students who sat the A/L, or who hold five credit passes at the O/L including mathematics, English and an IT-related subject. The institute also lists one-year advanced diplomas and higher national diplomas in data science. Open the NIBM profile to compare them.

Which data science course should you choose?

If you have just finished A/Ls

A bachelor's degree gives the broadest base. A shorter certificate lets you test whether you enjoy programming and statistics before a longer commitment. Read our guide to the data science degree routes in Sri Lanka for degree comparisons.

If you already hold a degree

A master's program builds on your first degree. The entry rules differ, so check that your degree subject and class meet the rule. Our MSc in data science guide covers the master's routes in more detail.

If you want a link to artificial intelligence

Many students pair data science with machine learning. Our guides to the BSc in AI and data science and the artificial intelligence degree show how the two fields overlap.

What should you check before you enrol?

Confirm whether the fee on the page is the total or a yearly amount, which campus runs the program, and which university awards it. Check the mathematics you need, because data science relies on statistics. Dates change, and several of these pages do not confirm a current intake, so ask the institute for the next start date.

Frequently asked questions

What are the data science courses in Sri Lanka?

They include bachelor's degrees, master's programs and shorter certificates and diplomas. Uplift lists programs from ESOFT Uni, KIU University, Universal College Lanka and NIBM.

Can I study data science after A/Ls?

Yes. The ESOFT Uni degree asks for two passes at the A/L, and the KIU degree asks for the A/L or an equivalent. Check each course page for the exact rule.

Do I need a computing degree for a data science master's?

Not always. The ESOFT Uni master's accepts a relevant degree in computing, mathematics, science or a related field, and the Universal College Lanka MSc accepts a bachelor's degree or an equivalent professional qualification.

How long does a data science course take?

The NIBM advanced certificate takes six months. The Universal College Lanka MSc takes 12 months full-time. The ESOFT Uni degree takes three years and the KIU degree four years.

How much do data science courses cost?

Fees depend on the program. The course pages list the tuition where it is available, and some pages do not list a fee yet, so confirm the current figure with the institute.

PS. Ready to compare? Open the data science programs on Uplift, shortlist two options and ask each institute about entry rules and the next intake before you apply.
