Every app you open and every bank you use runs on data. Data science turns that data into decisions, and many students now ask about it after A/Ls. This guide compares every data science program listed on Uplift, explains what each expects from you and shows where the degree can lead in Sri Lanka.
What you study
Data science sits between computing, mathematics and business. A typical program covers:
Foundations: programming (often Python), statistics, mathematics for computing and databases.
Core skills: data cleaning, data visualisation, machine learning and big data tools.
Applied work: projects using real data sets, and often a final-year research or industry project.
Programs that combine artificial intelligence with data science add more machine learning and intelligent systems. If you enjoy problem solving and are comfortable with numbers, it is worth a serious look.

How the three degrees differ
A UK-awarded degree in three years. The BSc (Hons) in Data Science at Esoft Uni is awarded by London Metropolitan University. It lists a minimum of two A/L passes, or a relevant HND or foundation program, with English proficiency. Its listing also describes an HND exit point after Year 2, a recognised qualification if you need to pause your studies.
AI and data science together. The BSc (Hons) Artificial Intelligence and Data Science at Universal College Lanka is awarded by the University of Lancashire. It accepts two simple passes at local A/L in any stream, or two D grades at Edexcel or Cambridge A/L, with a C in O/L English or a B in A/L General English. Its listing describes an optional fourth year in an industry placement.
A four-year honours degree with a placement. The BSc Honours in Data Science at KIU University takes four years and describes a work-based industrial placement in Year 3. A Mathematics or Physical Science background is recommended.
