TL;DR CMA Sri Lanka is the professional management accounting programme run by the Institute of Certified Management Accountants of Sri Lanka. Its 2023 to 2027 programme has four levels, from Certificate to Strategic, and a published direct entry route needs three passes at the G.C.E. A/L. Uplift does not list CMA classes, so this guide sets out what the published sources say and the accounting programs on Uplift that can sit beside it.
If you enjoy costing, budgeting and business decisions more than audit, management accounting may suit you. Start with the accounting programs inside the business study area, then use this page to see how the CMA route is built.
What is CMA Sri Lanka and who is it for?
CMA Sri Lanka offers a professional qualification in management accounting. It is a separate qualification from the United States CMA credential, so make sure the course you search for and register for is the Sri Lankan one.
The qualification suits school leavers who want a professional route, and also working people in finance and operations who want to move into management accounting roles. Because it is a professional body programme, the award comes from the Institute and not from a university. Many students therefore add a degree or HND alongside it.
How many levels does CMA Sri Lanka have?
Press coverage of the 2023 to 2027 programme describes four levels.
Level 1, Certificate
The Certificate level is the entry stage. It introduces the basics of accounting and business, and it is the starting point for most school leavers.
Level 2, Operational
The Operational level builds practical skills in costing and accounting at the level of day to day operations.
Level 3, Managerial
The Managerial level moves toward decision support and management control.
Level 4, Strategic
The Strategic level is the final stage. Its Integrative Case Study is described as the capstone of the study programme, where you apply what you have learnt to a business case.
Syllabus details are revised from time to time. The institute launched a fifth syllabus revision in 2023, so use its current syllabus pages for the exact subjects, and do not rely on older blog posts that mix the Sri Lankan programme with the United States credential.
What are the CMA Sri Lanka entry requirements?
A Pearson VUE page for CMA Sri Lanka states that direct entry to the Professional Programme needs a minimum of three passes at the G.C.E. A/L examination. It adds that the institute specifies other routes and lateral entry points, and that it grants pre-defined exemptions to graduates and to people who hold professional qualifications in accounting and related fields.
Exemptions are decided subject by subject by the institute, so a degree or another professional qualification may shorten your route. Ask the institute for its current exemption list before you plan around it. It also helps to count the time you can give each week, because a professional programme is usually studied part-time alongside school, a degree or a job. Earlier reports also say that examinations were offered in English, Sinhala and Tamil at the lower levels and in English at the upper levels, so confirm the language options for the batch you plan to join.
