TL;DR Chartered accountant Sri Lanka searches lead to one body, CA Sri Lanka, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka, which was founded in 1959. Published reports say students with three passes at the G.C.E. A/L can register, and the programme runs through three levels that lead to the CBA, CCA and ACA titles. Uplift does not list the professional classes themselves, so this guide sets out what the published sources say and the accounting routes on Uplift that can sit beside the qualification.
If accounting is your direction, start with the accounting programs inside the wider business study area. Then use this page to understand how the chartered route works and where a degree or HND fits.
How do you become a chartered accountant in Sri Lanka?
The route runs through CA Sri Lanka, the country's national professional accountancy body. It was set up by Act of Parliament No. 23 of 1959, and its Uplift page reports more than 9,000 members in 42 countries and more than 35,000 students. You can read more on the CA Sri Lanka institute page.
Press coverage of the institute says students with three passes at the G.C.E. A/L, or at the London A/L, can register, including on pending results. Working professionals who meet the basic requirements can study part-time. Entry rules and registration dates are updated by the institute, so confirm them on its current student pages before you apply.
The qualification itself is awarded by CA Sri Lanka, not by a university. That is why many students pair it with a degree or an HND from a separate institute.
What are the CA Sri Lanka levels?
Reports of the programme describe three levels, and each level has an exit title.
Business Level
Completing the Business Level gives the Certified Business Accountant title, known as CBA. This is the first stage and the one most new students begin with.
Corporate Level
Completing the Corporate Level gives the Certified Corporate Accountant title, known as CCA. A global accountancy body has publicly validated the ACA and CCA qualifications.
Strategic Level
The Strategic Level is the final stage and leads to the chartered accountant title, ACA. This is the level most people mean when they ask how to become a chartered accountant.
CA Sri Lanka has also started a new curriculum, and its first Business Level exams under it were reported in April 2026. Subject lists and exam rules differ between curriculum versions, so use the institute's current pages for the exact subjects. Practical training is part of the route too, and the length and timing of it depend on the current rules.
Can AAT or a degree shorten the route to ACA?
Sometimes. Exemptions are decided by CA Sri Lanka and apply subject by subject, so treat the points below as a guide and not a promise.
Press reports say AAT Sri Lanka finalists who completed the newer AAT structure are exempt from the four technical subjects at Business Level, and can move to Corporate Level after the Business Level capstone. Our AAT Sri Lanka guide explains how AAT is built.
A degree can help as well. CA Sri Lanka's own SAB Campus teaches a BSc (Hons) in Applied Accounting. Press reports say graduates of that degree on the 2020 curriculum could skip most Business Level and Corporate Level subjects and complete the Strategic Level only. That exemption belongs to that degree and curriculum, so do not assume other degrees carry it.
