TL;DR. BSc Hons meaning: it stands for Bachelor of Science with Honours, a full bachelor's degree in a science or technology subject that is awarded with an honours classification. In Sri Lanka the label appears on programs of three years and of four years, so check the length, the awarding university and the entry rule before you compare two of them.
Students often see "BSc (Hons)", "BA (Hons)", "BEng (Hons)" and "BM (Hons)" side by side and wonder whether the extra word changes anything. This guide explains what honours means and shows how it appears on programs listed on Uplift today.
What does BSc Hons mean?
BSc stands for Bachelor of Science. Hons is short for Honours. A BSc (Hons) is therefore the honours version of a Bachelor of Science. In the UK system that many Sri Lankan partner degrees follow, an honours degree is a bachelor's degree awarded with a classification, such as first class or upper second class, based on your marks across the years of study.
The same word is used with other subject letters. BA (Hons) is a Bachelor of Arts with Honours, BEng (Hons) is a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours, BM (Hons) is a Bachelor of Management with Honours and LLB (Hons) is a Bachelor of Laws with Honours. The letters tell you the subject family. The word Hons tells you the degree is the honours level.
How long does a BSc Hons take in Sri Lanka?
The length depends on the university that designed the program, not on the word Hons. The program pages on Uplift show both patterns. The institutes involved are the Asian Institute of Business and Science, ESOFT Uni and KIU University.
The BSc (Hons) Computing at the Asian Institute of Business and Science is listed as a 3-year full-time program awarded by Edge Hill University.
The BSc (Hons) in Computing at ESOFT Uni is listed as 3 years, awarded by London Metropolitan University.
The BSc Honours in Software Engineering at KIU University is listed as a 4-year full-time program.
So two programs with the same label can differ by a full year. Read the duration on each course page rather than assuming.
What is the difference between a BSc and a BSc Hons?
A plain BSc is a bachelor's degree without the honours classification. A BSc (Hons) adds the classification and usually a final project or dissertation. For example, the ESOFT Uni computing program ends with a substantial research or industry project in the final year, as its course page describes.
Employers and universities often ask for an honours degree when they set entry rules for a master's program. Check the requirement of the specific master's program you may want later, since each one states its own rule. Our guide to master's degree entry requirements shows how they are written.
Can you start with an HND and still finish a BSc Hons?
Yes, on programs that are built that way. The ESOFT Uni course page says students can exit after Year 2 with an HND, gain industry experience and return to complete the honours degree. The page lists the awarding university as London Metropolitan University and the total tuition as LKR 1,620,000, with an application fee of LKR 25,000. Our guide to the top-up degree route explains how an HND connects to a final honours year.
What entry rule applies to a BSc Hons?
Each program sets its own rule. The ESOFT Uni page asks for an A/L qualification with a minimum of three passes, or an equivalent foundation qualification. The AIBS page accepts six O/L passes including English and Mathematics, or two A/L passes in any stream. Read the rule on the course page and confirm it with the institute before you apply.
