TL;DR. Banking courses in Sri Lanka run from short certificates and professional diplomas to a degree and an MBA with a finance focus, so the right choice depends on whether you are starting after A/Ls or already working in a bank. Uplift lists a banking and finance degree and an MBA in finance at ESOFT Uni, plus digital banking programs at NIBM, with fees on each course page.

Banking and finance is a field where the starting qualification matters less than the route you plan from it. A school leaver, a graduate and a bank officer all search for banking courses, and they need different answers. This guide separates the routes and shows what each costs according to its Uplift course page.

What are the banking courses in Sri Lanka?

There are three broad routes. Professional qualifications from a banking body are the traditional path for people already in the sector. University degrees give a broader qualification for school leavers. Short certificates and diplomas give a quicker, skills-focused start. Uplift's finance study area, part of the wider business area, lists the degree, postgraduate and diploma routes below.

Professional banking qualifications

The Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka (IBSL) is the professional body most people in the sector know. Our guide to IBSL and its qualifications explains how its levels work, and it is the right first read if you work in a bank or plan to join one. Professional qualifications are usually taken part-time alongside work.

A banking and finance degree

The BSc (Hons) in Banking and Finance at ESOFT Uni is awarded by London Metropolitan University (UK). It runs for three years full-time in Colombo, and the course page lists tuition of LKR 1,620,000 in total plus an application fee of LKR 25,000. Entry asks for at least three passes at the A/L or an equivalent foundation qualification, and applicants with relevant work experience may be considered. The page describes the program as a study of the banking and financial services sector, with work on financial data analysis. Read our guide to the banking and finance degree in Sri Lanka for the full degree picture.

An MBA with a finance focus

The MBA (Finance) at ESOFT Uni is a part-time program awarded by London Metropolitan University (UK). The page lists tuition of LKR 790,000 in total. Entry asks for a relevant undergraduate degree or an equivalent professional qualification, and typically two years of managerial or professional experience. See also our MBA in finance guide.

Digital banking programs at NIBM

The National Institute of Business Management (NIBM) lists a stepped set of digital banking and finance programs. The Advanced Certificate in Digital Banking and Finance is a four-month part-time course with tuition of LKR 75,000. The advanced diploma runs for one year, at LKR 350,000 full-time for students after A/Ls and LKR 250,000 part-time for working professionals. The Higher National Diploma in Digital Banking and Finance is a one-year full-time program at LKR 400,000 for students who completed NIBM's full-time advanced diploma. NIBM's BSc (Hons) in Digital Banking and Finance runs for three years full-time and is awarded by Coventry University, with tuition of LKR 1,600,000.

Which banking course should you choose?

If you have just finished A/Ls

A degree gives the widest base, and the diploma and certificate ladder at NIBM lets you start smaller and step up. Compare the entry rules, because several programs build on an earlier one.

If you already work in a bank

A professional qualification or an MBA with a finance focus builds on your experience. The MBA asks for work experience, so check that your years of service meet the rule.

If you want to move into finance from another field

A short certificate is a low-risk way to test the area before a larger commitment. If your interest is accounting and not banking, our accounting courses guide is a better fit.

What should you check before you enrol?

Confirm whether the fee on the page is the total or a yearly amount, which campus runs the program, and what the awarding body is. Programs awarded by a foreign university can have extra requirements, such as English. Dates change, and the pages for these programs do not all confirm a current intake, so ask the institute for the next start date.
