TL;DR. An architecture degree in Sri Lanka is a long, professionally regulated route, and the programs on Uplift today sit in the neighbouring built-environment fields of interior architecture, quantity surveying and construction management. If you want to become a registered architect, check the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects (SLIA) rules first; if you want a degree in the built environment, the programs below are the routes listed on Uplift.
Many students say "architecture" when they mean a career in the built environment. The professional title of architect has its own regulated path, while related careers such as interior architecture, quantity surveying and construction management have separate degrees. This guide separates the two so you can pick the right route.
What is an architecture degree in Sri Lanka?
The architecture route to becoming a professional architect is set by the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects. SLIA assesses candidates in stages called Part I, Part II and Part III, with practical training before the final stage. The University of Moratuwa describes its architecture degree as a five-year full-time Bachelor of Architecture accredited by SLIA, and SLIA's own forms list that degree as exempt from the earlier parts. Daily FT has also reported SLIA validation of SLIIT's architecture degree.
Rules and exemptions change, so confirm the current position with SLIA and with the university before you apply. Uplift does not currently list a standalone architecture degree, so use the sources in the references to check that route directly.
Which built-environment programs are listed on Uplift?
Uplift groups these under the architecture, built environment and design study area. Its child areas include interior design, quantity surveying and construction management.
Interior architecture
The Bachelor of Arts in Interior Architecture at NIBM is a four-year full-time degree taught in the School of Design. The page lists a tuition fee of LKR 1,800,000 in total, with a registration fee of LKR 8,000 charged separately. It is listed at Kirulapone and Peradeniya, and NIBM has not confirmed a start date on the page, so ask the campus about the next intake.
Quantity surveying
Quantity surveyors manage costs and contracts on building projects. Programs listed today include:
The BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying - Kingston University (UK) at ESOFT Uni is full-time over three years. The page lists tuition of USD 6,000 in total and an application fee of USD 300.
The BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management at NIBM is awarded by Coventry University and runs part-time over three years. The page lists tuition of LKR 1,500,000.
Construction management
The MSc Management in Construction at ESOFT Uni is a part-time master's awarded by Kingston University. The page lists tuition of LKR 840,000 or USD 3,700 in total, so check which currency applies to you. It suits graduates and professionals who already work in the built environment.
How do these routes differ from an architecture degree?
An architect designs buildings and carries professional responsibility through the SLIA path. An interior architect focuses on interior space, materials and fit-out. A quantity surveyor focuses on cost, measurement and contracts. A construction manager focuses on delivering the project on site. They work in the same industry, but the training and the title differ.
