TL;DR: An MSc in IT in Sri Lanka is open to graduates, including those from other fields through conversion programs. On Uplift, Universal College Lanka lists MSc programs in cyber security and data science, and ESOFT Uni lists Kingston MSc programs in IT, software, data and network security. Compare entry rules, format and fees.

Many working professionals want an IT master's without leaving their job or their city. Sri Lanka now offers several routes, and they differ in who they accept.

This guide sorts the MSc options by entry rule, format and fee, using the program pages on Uplift.

Conversion MSc or specialist MSc

A conversion MSc accepts graduates from many fields and teaches the computing basics first. A specialist MSc expects a computing background. Knowing which one you need saves months.

Universal College Lanka MSc programs

The MSc Cyber Security and the MSc Data Science each run for twelve months, full-time. The entry rules ask for a bachelor's degree with a minimum second class lower division. Professional qualifications equivalent to a UK degree, such as CIMA or ACCA, are listed as accepted. Relevant work experience and UCL alumni status are also noted.

The MSc Data Science page describes a conversion MSc covering data analytics, big data and machine learning. The MSc Cyber Security lists a tuition fee of LKR 325,000. The MSc Data Science page did not list a fee at the time of writing, so check it with the institute.

Kingston MSc programs at ESOFT Uni

ESOFT Uni lists Kingston University (UK) master's programs in a hybrid format. The pages ask for a relevant undergraduate degree, usually with second class honours or equivalent.

Each of these lists LKR 790,000 in total tuition and a LKR 25,000 application fee.

How to compare them

  • Your degree is in another field: look at the conversion route first.

  • Your degree is in computing: compare the specialist programs.

  • You work full-time: check the format, since hybrid and part-time options differ.

  • You want a shorter course: check the listed duration on each page.

Fees need care. One page lists LKR 325,000 and others list LKR 790,000, but the programs differ in duration, format and awarding university, so price alone is not a fair comparison.

What comes after

A master's can lead to senior technical roles or to research. For related routes, read our guides to master's degrees in Sri Lanka and the data science degree routes.

Questions to ask before you apply

A master's is a serious commitment, so confirm the details in writing before you pay.

  • Is the awarding university stated on the certificate, and which one is it?

  • Are classes on weekdays, weekends or online, and how many hours a week?

  • Is there a final project, and who supervises it?

  • What happens if I miss a module?

Work and study together

Many applicants are already employed. Hybrid and part-time formats are made for that, but they still need steady weekly hours. Be realistic about your schedule, and talk to your employer early if you need flexible time.

Check your first degree against the rule

Entry rules name a grade, such as second class lower division or second class honours. If your result is close to the line, ask the institute whether work experience or a professional qualification can support your application.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do an IT master's with a non-IT degree?

A conversion program may accept it. Read the entry rules on the page.

Do professional qualifications count?

The Universal College Lanka pages list professional qualifications equivalent to a UK degree as accepted.

Is work experience required?

Several pages call it an advantage, and the Universal College Lanka pages list it as a route for some applicants.

Where do I find intake dates?

Open the program page on Uplift for the current dates.

PS. Check your degree against the entry rules, shortlist two programs and apply on Uplift.
