TL;DR: You can study computer science after your A/Ls through four main routes: a state university degree through the UGC, a fee-paying degree at a recognised private institute, UCSC's external BIT degree, or a Higher National Diploma that can lead on to a degree. The strongest route for you depends on your A/L stream, your z-score and your budget. Physical Science students have the most options, but Technology, Commerce and Arts students have real routes too.
A/L results are out, and one question comes up in almost every home with a student who likes computers: can I get into computer science, and if not, what else is there?
The honest answer is that there are more doors than most students realise. Only about one in four students who qualify for university get a state university place. For computing, that is not the end of the road. This guide walks through every route, from the most competitive state degree to the most flexible part-time option, so you can plan your next step with real numbers in front of you.
First, check which A/L stream you sat
Your A/L stream decides which computer science doors are open to you. Before you look at universities or fees, find your stream in this list.
Physical Science (Combined Maths, Physics, and Chemistry or ICT): you are eligible for almost every computing degree, including Computer Science, Engineering, Artificial Intelligence and Software Engineering.
Technology stream: the main state route is the Bachelor of ICT, offered at nine state universities. Several private institutes also accept you.
Biological Science: a few programmes, such as Management and Information Technology at the University of Kelaniya, reserve places for Bio stream students.
Commerce: some programmes accept subjects like Accounting and Business Statistics, and private institutes and the BIT degree accept any three A/L passes.
Arts: the University of Sri Jayewardenepura offers a BA in Information Technology for Arts students, and the flexible routes later in this guide are open to you too.
Keep your stream in mind as you read. Each route below says who it is for.
The state university routes through the UGC
State university degrees are admitted through the University Grants Commission (UGC). You apply once, list your preferred courses in order, and the UGC places you based on your z-score and district.
To be considered at all, you need at least an S pass in all three A/L subjects in one sitting, within three attempts, and at least 30% in the Common General Paper. For the 2025/2026 intake, the UGC listed 121 courses of study and let each student list up to 125 choices.
Computer Science
Computer Science is its own UGC course. According to the UGC handbook, you need at least a C in Combined Maths, Higher Mathematics or Physics, plus S passes in two more subjects from Combined Maths, Higher Mathematics, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and ICT.
It is offered as a three year BSc at the University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC), the University of Jaffna, the University of Ruhuna and the Trincomalee Campus of Eastern University. Four year honours versions are offered at UCSC, the University of Kelaniya, the University of Jaffna and the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, where it is a Bachelor of Computing.
Computer engineering, through Engineering
If you want the hardware side as well as software, look at Engineering. You need S passes in Combined Maths, Physics and Chemistry.
Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Moratuwa, and Computer Engineering at the Universities of Peradeniya, Ruhuna, Jaffna and Sri Jayewardenepura, are specialisations inside Engineering. You enter Engineering first, and the university allocates specialisations later. A place in Engineering does not guarantee a place in the computing stream, so ask the faculty how that allocation works.
Newer specialist degrees
The UGC now lists several focused computing degrees:
Artificial Intelligence at the University of Moratuwa, a four year honours degree taught in English, with 50 places. Eligibility matches Computer Science.
Data Science at Sabaragamuwa University, a four year degree with 65 places. You also need an O/L credit in English.
Software Engineering at the Universities of Kelaniya, Sabaragamuwa and Sri Jayewardenepura. You need S passes in Combined Maths and Physics, plus Chemistry, Higher Mathematics or ICT.
Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Kelaniya, which needs Physics with Combined or Higher Maths.
Routes open to other streams
Some computing degrees are listed under courses open to several A/L streams. These are the ones to look at if you did not sit Physical Science.
| Degree | Who can apply | Where |
| Bachelor of ICT (Honours) | Technology stream: ICT, Science for Technology, and Engineering or Biosystems Technology | Nine state universities, including Colombo, Sri Jayewardenepura, Kelaniya and Ruhuna |
| Information Systems | At least a C in Combined Maths, Physics or ICT, plus any two other subjects, and O/L credits in English and Maths | UCSC, Sri Jayewardenepura, Sabaragamuwa |
| Information Technology | Three passes including a C in Higher Maths, Combined Maths, Maths or Physics | University of Moratuwa |
| IT and Management | C grades in two listed subjects, which include Accounting and Business Statistics, plus O/L English and Maths credits | University of Moratuwa |
| Management and IT | Bio or Physical Science stream, or two of those subjects plus ICT, with O/L Maths and English | University of Kelaniya |
| BA in Information Technology | Any three Arts stream subjects, plus an O/L Maths credit | University of Sri Jayewardenepura |
Always check the exact subject rules in the latest UGC handbook before you rank your choices. They change, and the handbook is the only version that counts.
What z-score do you need?
Cut-off z-scores change every year and differ by district. The table below shows the official Colombo district cut-offs for the 2025/2026 intake, based on the 2025 A/L results. Your own district's figure may be higher or lower.
| Programme | Colombo district cut-off |
| Engineering, University of Moratuwa (includes Computer Science and Engineering) | 2.0363 |
| Engineering, University of Peradeniya | 1.8674 |
| Engineering, University of Sri Jayewardenepura | 1.8079 |
| Computer Science, UCSC | 1.6565 |
| Computer Science, University of Sri Jayewardenepura | 1.5765 |
| Computer Science, University of Kelaniya | 1.5237 |
| Computer Science, University of Ruhuna | 1.3825 |
For the other programmes in this guide, including Artificial Intelligence, Information Technology and Information Systems, open the UGC's official cut-off document and find your district's row. Use last year's figures as a guide, not a promise. If your z-score sits close to a cut-off, list that course, but also list safer choices below it.
The admissions calendar to plan around
The state university process runs on a fixed yearly cycle. Here is how the most recent cycle ran, so you know roughly when each step comes.
A/L results. The 2025 A/L results were released at the end of March 2026.
UGC online application. Applications opened on 28 April 2026 and closed on 19 May 2026. Students then had two more weeks to change the order of their course choices.
Cut-off z-scores. The UGC published the official cut-offs on 31 July 2026.
Private and flexible routes. These run on their own calendars. Many private institutes take several intakes a year, and SLIATE's HND applications for 2026 closed in early August.
The key lesson from this calendar: private intakes and HND deadlines often fall before or around the time state cut-offs are published. If you want a backup place, apply for it while you wait for your UGC result, rather than after. Ask each institute whether a deposit is refundable if you later receive a state university offer.
If you do not get a state place
The numbers explain why so many students need a plan B. In the 2025 A/L examination, 176,527 students qualified for university. The UGC's proposed intake for 2025/2026 was 42,937 places. Missing out on a state place is the most common outcome, not a failure.
Private institutes offer four year computing degrees with fewer seats lost to the z-score race. Before you pay a deposit, check two things: that the degree is recognised by the UGC, and what the total cost will be across all four years.
| Institute | Degree | Length | Entry, per the institute | Published fee |
| SLIIT | BSc (Hons) Computer Science | 4 years | Three S passes in Physical Science (ICT can replace Chemistry), plus an aptitude test | LKR 395,000 per semester |
| NSBM Green University | BSc (Hons) Computer Science | 4 years | Physical Science or Engineering Technology; other streams with an O/L Maths credit and a bridging programme | LKR 700,000 per year, plus registration and library fees |
| IIT, with the University of Westminster | BSc (Hons) Computer Science | 4 years, including a 12 month placement | See the institute | Not published |
| APIIT, with Staffordshire University | BSc (Hons) Computer Science | 4 years, including a placement year | Three A/L passes, plus O/L credits in English and Maths | Not published |
General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University also takes fee-paying day scholars into computing degrees, including Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science and Information Systems. Check KDU's day scholar page for the current intake and fees.
Fees above are the institutes' own published figures and can change. Ask each institute for a written total that includes registration, exams and any placement year.
