The Bachelor of Biomedical Science prepares students for laboratory-based and research careers in health and medical science. It is an Edith Cowan University degree taught on the Rajagiriya campus, which has purpose-built biomedical laboratories. The first year covers anatomy and physiology, human genetics, pathophysiology, statistics and chemistry for the life sciences. Later years move into applied microbiology, immunology, pharmacology, medical biochemistry, forensic genetics and developmental biology, and finish with biomedical ethics and a final-year Professional Practice unit that places students in clinical, laboratory, professional or simulated settings. ECU notes that graduates can go on to specialise in areas such as medical microbiology, clinical chemistry, transfusion science, histopathology, cytology, virology or immunology. Students who study all three trimesters in a year can complete the three-year degree in two years. Unit availability can change between intakes.
