TL;DR: A psychology degree in Sri Lanka can be a three-year UK-awarded BSc or a four-year local honours degree, with a one-year diploma as a shorter first step. On Uplift you can compare all three, with entry rules from two to three A/L passes in any stream. Many counselling and clinical roles also need postgraduate study later, so plan the full path from the start.

The psychology degrees on Uplift welcome students from any A/L stream. Science, Commerce, Arts or Technology, you can apply. That openness, along with interest in mental health and wellbeing, is why so many students search for it.

But "psychology" covers a wide range of careers. Before you pick a programme, it helps to know what each route gives you.

Three ways to study psychology in Sri Lanka

Here are the psychology programmes currently on Uplift. Durations and fees come from each programme's Uplift page.

Three years or four years?

This is the first decision most students face.

The BSc (Hons) in Psychology at Esoft Uni is awarded by London Metropolitan University and follows the UK model, where an honours degree takes three years. Entry asks for at least two A/L passes, and students with a relevant HND or foundation can also apply.

The Bachelor of Science Honours in Psychology at KIU University follows the Sri Lankan model. Under the Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework, a four-year honours degree sits at level 6 with at least 120 credits, while a three-year general degree sits at level 5 with at least 90 credits. KIU is listed by the Ministry of Higher Education as a recognised degree awarding institute, and its psychology degree appears on that list.

Neither is better in itself. Ask yourself:

  • Do you want to finish sooner and start working or studying further? The three-year route is shorter.

  • Do you want a local honours award and an extra year for depth and research? The four-year route gives you that.

  • What is your budget? Compare the full cost, not the yearly cost.

Where the diploma fits

The Diploma in Psychology and Counselling at KIU takes 12 months, full-time. It suits two groups: students who want to test their interest before committing to a full degree, and working adults, such as teachers or HR staff, who want counselling skills for their current role.

A diploma alone is usually not enough for professional psychology roles, so treat it as a first step rather than the finish line.

What you can do with a psychology degree in Sri Lanka

A bachelor's in psychology builds skills employers use in many fields: understanding behaviour, research methods, data analysis and communication. Graduates often move into areas such as:

  • Human resources and recruitment, where understanding people is the core of the job

  • Education and student support, in schools, institutes and special needs settings

  • Research and data, in NGOs, market research and public health projects

  • Counselling and wellbeing support, often after further training

  • Postgraduate study, the route into clinical, counselling and organisational psychology

That last point matters. Many clinical and counselling roles ask for a master's and supervised practice after the first degree. If those are your goal, choose a bachelor's that keeps the master's door open, and ask the institute how its graduates progress.

For a wider view of how to match a degree to the person you are, read how to pick a degree when you are not sure what you want.

Questions to ask before you apply

  1. Which modules are compulsory, and which are optional?

  2. Is there a research project or dissertation in the final year?

  3. Are there practical or placement components?

  4. How can the fee be paid, and over what period?

  5. What have recent graduates gone on to do?

Frequently asked questions

Can I study psychology in Sri Lanka with Commerce or Arts A/Ls?

Yes. Both bachelor's programmes on Uplift accept A/Ls in any stream. The Esoft degree asks for at least two passes and the KIU degree for at least three.

How long is a psychology degree in Sri Lanka?

Three years for the London Metropolitan University degree at Esoft Uni, and four years for the KIU honours degree. The KIU diploma takes 12 months.

How much does a psychology degree cost in Sri Lanka?

On Uplift, the Esoft Uni degree lists LKR 1,620,000 total tuition plus LKR 25,000 registration. The KIU fees are available on their Uplift pages or on request.

Can I become a clinical psychologist with a bachelor's degree alone?

Usually not. Clinical roles generally need postgraduate training and supervised practice after a first degree. A bachelor's is the foundation for that path.

Is a psychology diploma worth it?

It is a useful first step if you want to test your interest or add counselling skills to your current job. For professional psychology roles, plan to continue to a degree.

PS: Psychology suits curious people who like asking why others think and act the way they do. Compare the programmes above on Uplift and shortlist the route, three years or four, that fits your plans.
